I think the great David Foster Wallace once made this comparison. There is a form of self-absorbed writing that centers around the own universe and that doesn't transcend into the experiences of other individuals. I think it is some way a form of solipsism. Due to the fact one isn't able to bridge the gap to the consciousness of the people that read one's own texts. This is probably a pretty bad paraphrasing and it is also my interpretation of his words. Not sure where he said it. I read almost every interview of him. There is a form of meta-writing and meta-perspectives of meta-perspectives that don't really have a benefit to the readers. Especially, if the writing centers around me, myself and I. It might be interesting to read how someone becomes stuck in infinite spirals of thoughts. Though, you very quickly get bored by such content.
Why am I writing this? I am searching for a niche. I consider to start a Substack account. There are many things that come to my mind. Who is the audience? I knew some people in real life who would be interested in my writing. Though, I think I don't want to connect my real identity with this Substack account. And I don't really want that people who know me in real life read that Substack content when they know I am the creator. I think my writing is good when there is some form of intimacy between me and the reader. And I think I would be too embarrassed ot use a title like this one if many people knew my real life identity. I could imagine to share my texts on here too. Not sure.
I think though my writing has to transform a lot when I want to grow a followership on substack. My writing has to improve. Personally, I am not decided yet to really go through with this. This will take some resources, time and energy. I think though the platform is better for me than Youtube. I think one of the biggest changes will be that I write in my native language. My English is far from perfect. I am not used to write informal on German though. There are some jokes that work better on English. I will try to offer with translators English versions of my texts.
I think I don't put that much effort in the texts I post on here. The texts on substack had to be longer. Maybe double the size of a long thread of mine. On here sometimes I don't even correct formal mistakes when I am too stressed out. I think I would want to write for a German and international audience. I am not sure why I actually consider to go gown this route. I think content creation can be funny. And writing on here gives me something. But I am not sure whether substack will be the same. I consider to post articles also on here. Just because it will take time to find readers. I don't really expect to make money of it. I think my writing isn't good or consistent enough. And the irony would be if I were successful the pressure would probably make collapse pretty quickly. Maybe I should spend ym energy on other projects.
The topics had to be less edgy than my usual threads I guess. But also not fully conventional. But sometimes on here I write bait titles and on substack I think this would make me look bad. The audience is probably different. Less explicit mental health stuff would be appropriate.
I would probably write essays. Most of my thread sound like a stream of consciousness. And this is the easiest way of writing for me. But it is also repetitive. It is probably a part of what makes my writing not average due to the fact I have a consciousness on high alert. But it wouldn't be ideal for a platform like Substack. I cannot have a mental crisis on a daily basis on there. But here is also the question am I stable enough to post on Substack. On the other hand, if I don't make money with it there will more or less no consequences if I take breaks from writing.
I could imagine writing a trial essay and to post in on here where I can ask for feedback. I wanted to add to the title of the thread. I am very good at expressing and describing the nuances of my inner consciousness but my writing has to transcend and bridge my writing to cultural and political events outside of my own hemisphere (mind palace). And this isn't something I am particularly good in.
My writing on here often is meandaring around a complex of ideas. Instead my writing on substack needed a clearer guiding question. Otherwise it becomes too confuse. My writng often involves self-justifications and relativizng my own opinion. My writing should have a clear structure instead.
For example:
1. a concrete experience or observation
2. a psychological interpretation
3. framing by media, politics etc.
4. ambivalence or counterarguments
5. a pointed ending
My writing should not look like a mind-map a better writing would be more dense and in a coherent form. And I have to address the reader and give him the reason to follow my content. My observations have to go beyond introspection and make interferences to culture, politics, society etc. This thread is another example for these flaws.
What do you think?
Edit: If you agree with the statement of the title; what does this say about you the reader of my content?
