i just bought my SN and it arrived today. I'm second guessing if it will be enough to CTB. Can I PM someone the link to the one I bought?

Also, how can I test it via strips?

Sorry, I'm new here and not quite sure how to navigate this site ;-;

Many contributors here have been helpful to members with similar questions like you. Unfortunately, the PM function for new users aren't available right off the bat.

You can find testing info here:

ooo thank you!

my SN says 100% on the container but surely that has to be false, no? the safety sheet says 99% so either say, i'm curious to test it. i'm kind of suspicious because apparently it's quite impossible to get in my country, but i got it fairly easy – a bit of searching, no documentation, shipped in 1 day.

You're absolutely right ✅ it's highly unlikely for it to be 100%.
If it's okay to ask, how many grams, what grade (technical, food grade etc.) and how much did you pay for your SN? Most tech and food grade are around 98-99%.

i just had a look at the website i ordered it from but it doesn't actually say the grade? it states it's used for cleaning (something about descaling and pH) – the website i bought it from supplies all sorts of things (not just cleaning chemicals) to industrial kitchens. ANYWAYS, on the container itself, the SN does state it's for food preservation, colouring for processed meats etc, but also medical corrosion inhabitation(?).

i could only buy it in bulk (5kg – very overkill lol), and i paid about $140 AUD. i want to test it with the strips, but then i know opening the container and exposing it to air will ruin it 😭 i don't want it to be less effective when i choice to use it…

Opening the container to just take a few sample doesn't ruin it. You can test it with the strips and blood test to check until then. You can read the thread on sn stability on the sticky threads atop.

5kg is a lot but yeah, it's no surprise. I think you ordered from a raw material distributor. Hence the general labels and the absolute monstrosity of the amount :haha:SN is usually used in industrial scale anyways so that's to be expected.

In your case, I think testing might be smart. Don't worry too much about losing purity when you open the batch for testing. You can repack some into smaller resealable containers (bottles or ziplocks), just make sure they're clean, dry and airtight. It's best to do it in a cool dry place. Moisture is usually the biggest issue, but you can safely repack sn if you do it right. That way, you can test samples and have separate containers in case something happens to the main one.

The grade of SN [food, lab, etc.] does not matter. It's still exactly the same chemical. Food grade simply means it's been tested to be free of harmful shit so people can safely use it for food preservation.

I don't think it's a good idea to open it unless one is planning to use it immediately or at least very soon preferably not more than 3 months. The factory made seal is best for keeping air and moisture out. I am not sure one can manage anything as efficient as that once it is broken.

I honestly don't know why people have this urge to test beforehand - especially ones that come in branded packaging with assay specifications and everything. I can understand if it came in a plain ziplock bag put inside a cardboard box.

In that case one can understand the urge to test as it could be anything. But large brands usually don't lie like that and IMO it's best to put off testing to just before CTB so that the SN will stay fresh and intact for as long as it's needed.
