  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Hello Community!

Has someone become a vegetable from surviving sn ? it seems like a possibility as with many overdoses but I've yet to read a case where someone survived with brain damage- it seems like there's only data on successful and unsuccessful attempts with this method. Has someone survived with permanent brain damage but we just don't hear from them anymore? So we assume they ctb?

We just won't know. Newspapers don't print stories about average-people suicides, certainly not a failed suicide. Anybody sufficiently damaged won't be capable of reporting back online. There are very few research articles on suicide with SN as it is so not a good resource for big data. There's no way to know the actual potential results. People we hear from are lucky to be fine enough, and the rest are hopefully passed and not stuck in a much worse situation.

If there were cases of severe brain damage, then there would probably also be cases of mild or moderate brain damage from attempts, and with those they'd still likely be capable of reporting back, and would want to, to warn others. So I'm thinking that it's unlikely.

And, in the grand scheme of things, it's a relatively new method so there's just not a lot of data out there. Hospitals would know.

There has been a lot of previous discussion on this. Even recently. Here is some of it. Look at some of the other big SN threads, too.

I take my comment back. I was just reading the suicide wiki for SN and learned why SN isn't likely to cause brain damage. In short, the increased nitric oxide that also results from SN poisoning protects the brain. It induces a significant increase in blood flow to the brain (causing the rapid heart beat) which compensates for the low blood oxygen. Essentially, your body makes sure your brain is receiving adequate oxygen, minimizing chance of brain damage. You lose consciousness from the rapid loss of blood pressure. It seems that by the time your brain starts to starve of oxygen, you're very likely to die anyways. This has been a big question of mine and I'm happy to read this detailed description of the process of SN poisoning.

This thread is somewhat informative. From my cursory read of the cited paper (Huntington & Pennington, 2021), the patient didn't "survive with brain damage" (to use OP's parlance) - she ended up brain-dead. Worth noting, too, that at least six hours had passed before emergency services found her.

Thanks coming back to share this important information! This makes me significantly more relieved.
