My legal will was a big project that I have been thinking about for years. Doing it reliably is not a very cheap affair, especially in my area. I was quoted $1,400, and even then, the lawyer didn't bother getting back to me, and now I'm sort of over it. I had planned to leave everything to a niece who is the only person in the family who actually likes me. But in the end, it doesn't seem worth the hassle.
For those leaving things to friends instead of family, there is a small danger that the family might try and go after the friends, or even accuse them of being complicit in the suicide for financial gain. It's a thought that I've had, knowing how incredibly un-trustworthy my family is. Note that Exit International recommends writing a suicide note which stresses that the decision has been made of one's own accord with no outside influence.
By default, with no proper will, everything goes to the family. It's an unfortunate irony that people who did everything possible to destroy me will be financially rewarded, but I've resigned myself to that reality. Let them have it all.
