Instant death is very rare. Sometimes it´s caused by a vagal reflex, the sudden Stop of the bloodflow. More likely ist that you pass out after reaching the end of a drop at a long drop hanging with broekn neck. The length oft he drop depends on what´s your weight. The knot has to be placed under the left ear.

That's the idea with long drop, like more than your body height, but there's a science to it and you have to get the right knot and positioned right, etc. to break the neck. Chances of someone pulling it off solo and doing everything right are quite low.
Like the other person said, make the drop long enough and you'll probably get decapitated regardless of the knot and it should be a quick death but no picnic for whoever has to deal with the body.
