Debts will be collected in full anything left over in the estate would go to next of kin... that's how the uk works anyway. Your family is entitled to some money first to cover funeral costs

NB the debt does not pass to family unless they have consigned.

I live in the USA and I'm just curious because everything I have is all under my name, and I don't want to leave my debt behind to anyone in my family

Unless they have cosigned your debts, your family is not responsible for them.

If they have cosigned any of your loans, they are on the hook for them and there is nothing you can do to change that. Even if you were to release the cosigner, the lender will likely sue them after your death.

You will be declared "inestate" and your debts will be discharged by the probate court.

Your family will be responsible for burial costs and funeral expenses. Even if you do not wish for these things, your remains must be dealt with.

Want to hear something fucked up in the US - if a student dies, in most cases, their parents still have to repay the loans if they cosigned. Imagine dying the last year of a master's program and your parents owing around $200k for your education...

Thankfully this isn't the case with federal student loans in the US—even Parent PLUS loans get cancelled in the event of the death of the student. But you're absolutely right when it comes to private loans if the parent co-signed, which is why it's *so* important to read through the terms before accepting (I worked in the financial aid office at my university for a few years). The interest rates are usually much higher for private than federal student loans as well. Although we'll see going forward with the rate hikes…

Sorry to hear about your financial problems Puma. I wonder how many people end up ctb due to poverty, loss of job, facing homelessness or loss of all money and no way to make any more? It would be one of my reasons to add to my ctb for sure. I hope something can work out for you.

Your debt will not be transferred, being single is not bad, being bankrupt means it's temporary. I believe you can work back, I wish that for you. Don't make quick decisions, I have and was hanging from a rope, take time and see someone and if then no way out, find your peace. What did I do, pick goals, some extreme ones, do the gym, listen to self help/motivation on YouTube. Don't give up if someone else put you here. There are solutions to your questions, ways to get out of your predicament, find them and make the best. Good luck.

Thank You for your positive feed back, there is more to my story, I'm just really curious about my financial situation. I'm so burnt out and overwhelmed by life that's just half of my problems.😮‍💨
