I am not sure whether cloudflare supports this forum. I think yes but I am not sure. I know there is a lot of criticism for services that clouflare provides. They protect websites from hacking and DDOS attacks. Such services defend themselves that the internet is simply a mirror image of the society. They are not the ones that should judge on content. One could call this a lazy excuse due to the fact they have some rules and don't allow everything. I am not sure. I think they have some exceptions for example illegal pornography where they draw the line. I think they are way more liberal on grey areas compared to the judicial standards. I think there are some extreme sites supported by cloudflare but I am not sure for example gore websites but others have way more profound knowledge than me in this instance. One could argument even if cloudflare drops a website they can still find companies in autocracies where they don't have any standards. I think many illegal websites do that.
Personally I am pretty much in favor of freedom on the internet. But I lack the necessary information to have a strong opinion.
Here are some topics which are probably controversial. Bullying (happens a lot even on websites like Twitter and it is tolerated), racism, doxxing, hatred against the LGBTQI+ community, left or rightwing extreme views, propaganda for war crimes (youtube banned Russia today for example), gore and other violent/ disturbing videos, porn from people who might have not consented to the upload (this becomes more and more a topic). I have even read there are suicide forums where people vent about there shitty lives and discuss suicide. Moreover there is illegal filesharing, illegal streaming and other copyright infringements.
I realize I just don't know enough legally speaking to give a nuanced opinion. This group is pretty heterogeneous and every single point had to be discussed for its own. Maybe a case to case evaluation would be necessary.
So here is my gut feeling which is not really thought through. There is a lot of censorship on the internet. The censorship on facebook is a fucking joke. I read a woman was bullied on facebook. She posted a video where she described she is suicidal. Then her bullies reported that video on facebook for expressing suicidality. The woman killed herself soon afterwards. So I think the censorship on facebook is very counterproductive especially their policy on suicidality.
I think youtube has made a lot of changes especially since some scandals and the war in Ukraine. I think youtube has somewhat success with their approach. Personally I would be interested to watch the Russian propaganda with my own eyes but too many people would become brainwashed by that.
Bullying is pretty difficult. There are different forms of bullying and also differences of the intensity. The same applies to racism or hatred against minorites.
I am not sure on gore. I watched that as a teenager and I regret it now. But websites like liveleak were used to document crimes against humanity. But many in safe countries used the websites to watch people brutally dying. I am not sure whether reddit still allows that content.
I think one might could group different websites into different subgroups. Facebook is extremely restrictive. Reddit might be a middle position of mainstream platforms. And Twitter is the mainstream website with the most extreme content. I am not really sure why they don't have to abide to children safety measures now when I think of it. The authorities in my country become more and more serious on that issue.
I think I would be of the above examples the most liberal on copyright infringements. Let's be real the internet only consists of that. I think many series profit of such behavior. For example when people make memes or they film themselves in a soccer stadium when they celebrate a goal. In the US fair use is pretty popular. Many German content creators envy the US standards. Anime series gain popularity when fan groups translate them. But it is probably not that white-black as how I depict it.
What do you think of that?
