I live in the UK and yesterday the Princess of Wales Kate Middleton announced she has cancer and undergoing preventative chemotherapy. Our King also has cancer too.
As usual whenever someone announces they have cancer the reaction is often " They are so brave" , " we are so sorry we are here help" etc. Majority of the time it is an outpouring of love and support . If a person says they have depression or any mental illness the story is different. The reaction is a more hostile reaction with the folks" you know people have it harder than you", "get over it" " attention seeker" etc. The support depending on family and friends some people do get support but many others don't. These people lose friends and experience family being unsympathetic.
Cancer charities get billions in donations because when it comes to cancer people will always feel sympathy and strongly about it because they know someone who suffers or has died from cancer. Cancer research has evolved in finding better treatments because of public donations. Cancer patients get a lot of support for things as in the UK specialist initiatives exist to help cancer sufferers and their families.
If depression and suicide had the same care and support that cancer gets then maybe treatment outcomes for depression will not be as poor like we see today.
