In New Zealand a bill allowing choice for the end of life for the terminally ill may become law later this month. It appears that if it is going to pass at all, the clauses and 'loopholes' for the mentally ill pursuing euthanasia will have to be struck out. While it's a start, IMO, I am annoyed that those being passed around our shithouse public health system (myself included) waiting for an opportunity like this may have to wait a few more years or decades. The whole thing is set up to ensure people 'are kept safe' i.e. not attempt suicide through methods that will harm if unsuccessful. I believe that I wouldn't be attempting risky methods anyway, if a safe and voluntary option was available.

I'm interested to know whether this view is shared with anyone here. I'm considering writing to my MP and it would help to know whether or not this is a product of the echo chamber in my head lol. Do you think the rates of 'traumatic' suicide attempts would go down if euthanasia was legal for those with mental illness?
yes

Here In Belgium it is legal, but very hard to get. Depends, if you have a safe and reliable option at your disposal and you're 99% sure it's going to work i'd do it yourself. Euthanasia is great but you're often looking at years of evaluation and seeing doctors. These people really don't give up easily and will try every method to cure you first. If you really want to go you don't have time for that...

I once had a meltdown in college and told my mom I was so tired of life, I feel awful, and I want to fly to Oregon for assisted suicide! That statement put me in the hospital pretty quick. The psych one. Not for assisted suicide. :(

If assisted suicide was available to me, I would pursue euthanasia in a heartbeat. No second thoughts, no regrets.

Yes, and I would make sure that everyone who's hurt me regrets it for life!
