I wish schools did a better job at actually preparing you for how cutthroat the world is

All the useless bullshit we forget and isn't actually, helpful, they don't tell you how fucked it will be if you fail, let your hygiene slip, what will happen if you fall in with the wrong crowd etc. they dance around some of those topics, but they just make you sit through boring shit that you'll probably forget or drone out unless it happens to actually be of interest. Maybe I'm just doing a poor loser's ranting as the games nearly over and i've lost, but I truly feel I was not prepared for this. Not even in the mother fucking slightest it's worse out here than I could of ever imagined

The school system dates centuries and has never had a ground-up reinvention. In the old days, the mentality was that children were to be broken down and molded into the shape of being servants to society (taxpayers, consumers, law-abiders, etc.). The saying went, "children are to be seen but not heard." School was a factory to mass-produce obedient wage slaves.

If school actually cared about children, it would operate very differently. Children would be taught how to think rather than what to think. Criticisms of society would not be stifled.

Meanwhile, as someone with life experience, I could probably teach more critical topics in 1 hour than are taught in a decade of classroom BS.
* How to avoid being seduced and destroyed by 'Dark Triad' individuals
* The nature of relationships and families
* The numerous possible ways of approaching life, including non-Western and historical perspectives
* Dealing with time and money, and the wider issue of choice-making in general
* Functioning in the world without being consumed by it

didn't do private school, but a magnet program with college level coursework... same though, failed uni, failed to get a good job, lots of failure.

I wish I could have taken the Pluto crash course at 17. Points 1 and 4 especially. My life could have taken a very different and positive turn had I known a bit better.

When I read you, I feel this pain, this injustice, this bitterness that you go through when you think back to everything you went through...

I understand, I think that as many have experienced here, schooling only prepares us for the feeling of "success", but in no way is it the real reflection of what life is like.

Very often, I have the feeling that we only have one chance in our existence, the missteps are simple but the fact of being properly registered in a stable cycle is something else.

I imagine that you may think that your chance has passed...

I feel that this is not what schools are for, it is what parents are for. Mine fucked me up through permissive/neglectful parenting.

My mother was raised through authoritarian parenting by a cruel father and that fucked her up. She then decided to give me the exact OPPOSITE upbringing, letting me do whatever I want with no real consequences. When I hit puberty and started having behavioural problems, nobody did anything to address them.

Here I am, a grown up with a lifetime of bad choices, angry that there's nobody to pick the bill for me now. Everything being a joke seems like a good idea when you're 13. 15 years later and my LIFE is a joke. Unfortunately, I just now realize it - so far the consequences werent real.

Schools here have just become a adult daycare center. They barely teach life skills, economics, how to do taxes etc.
Now there are agendas being pushed by some teachers and this climit change rubbish, kids are being brought up to be so scared it is just bad.

I know of a few people who are now teaching kids through home school and within half the year they have already finished a years worth of work at a normal school.
Just feel so bad for this new generation of kids who are pretty much never allowed to fail anything and get awards for doing pretty much nothing.
Time will tell but suicides are on the rise in most western nations and this is part of the blame for it.

My experience of school, college and uni taught me that school usually only prepares you for more school. You'd kind of hope that the nearer you got to specialising in a chosen subject/ career- the more they would prepare you for it... but no. Honestly, I kind of wish I'd done an apprenticeship.
