  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

That must be why teenagers have the lowest number of suicides. Funny how that works out, isn't it?

Then again, the people willfully ignorant to say such things likely won't pay any heed to actual, real-world statistics.

I agree that the redditor is full of shit. But to be fair, teenagers are more likely to be impulsive, rush their attempt and fail at it (or do a suicidal gesture aka cry-for-help) - so maybe suicide attempts is a more accurate stat for debunking this than successful suicides? Don't know if they track that data though.

That's a good point, though I haven't found any reliable data for suicide attempts. It's very hard (if not impossible) to accurately track those, after all. My own attempts aren't part of any database, and I doubt it's any different from most people here who have attempted.

Only people who have never been suicidal would say something like that. They sound like the type of people who drive others to suicide in the first place. It's just nonsense that does not reflect the reality of this existence. If someone believes something like that then they are very delusional.

Sure, I felt suicidal when I was a teenager, but I am 55 now and still feel at least passively, wistfully, suicidal. I think those people on Reddit don't know what they are talking about.

Reddit is populated by self centered know it all. Opinions without facts or knowledge. The amount of people on there that proclaim themselves experts is uncanny. I can guarantee that every subject will commented on by someone who has been through whatever the topic is. Then of course there are the pro lifers giving the pray and things will improve. SMH

I get that in a way because there were people who were like "I just cut my wrists" or "I just swallowed x paracetamol" and they were quite attention seeking kids anyway. Yeh it probably was a phase for them, or they just did it for attention. It's hard to know who to take serious because people do change their minds a lot...same as how many people tell you they don't want kids then swiftly change their minds. It makes it so much harder for the rest of us who are serious about their life decisions to be believed.

I think there are probably a lot of people who have an episode of suicidal ideation / attempt in response to inability to regulate their emotions during a difficult point in their lives (which is harder for many as a teen, and every experience is new and uncharted). These people may go on to develop different tools for dealing with their difficulties and never again contemplate the abyss. Each circumstance is different.

But that only accounts for that one subset. Not for the many of us for whom suicidal ideation and / or intent persists indefinitely. I think it's just another way of pro lifers minimising / invalidating that the wish to die isn't necessarily always a "permanent solution to a temporary problem". Sometimes it's a solution to a permanent problem. What they think they know is the one tiny aspect of a much bigger subject, because they want to focus always on the "it gets better" rhetoric.

Irregardless, it's dismissive. Even if it is a "phase" or a bid for attention for some, what's wrong with a cry for help if it's saving someone who actually does want to be saved? They're a human being in pain who should be free to communicate that pain without being belittled and judged. And I am all for helping someone who wants help to navigate whatever they're going through, and I hope they can go on to feel better and thrive if that's possible for them.

Equally I wish people could just accept that there are also plenty of us who know ourselves and what we want and end the stigma around it. I don't see what's wrong with thinking it all through and taking the decision to choose death.

Similar with you, I've been suicidal for 16 years since I was 27yo.

It doesn't go away as I'm older, I just need to learn more thoroughly to make sure I will never ever fail the attempt again.

The r/suicidewatch subreddit has over 300,000 redditors subscribed to it. A lot of the posts made there are by teenagers, but I think a lot of them are cries for help. Of just 1 post made by a teenager, there's likely 10 more made by actual adults who seriously intend on committing suicide. At least that's how it looks to me.

No empathy is right, OP, but what do you expect from Redditors? Probably the Internet's dumbest userbase.

I think saying you're suicidal is just a phase of edgy teens that goes away once you're older. Actually being suicidal that isn't the case at all though.
