Here is an article which is ambivalent on it. The US is number 12 in terms of yearly hours worked by the average worker. Germany is the last one with the fewest hours. Lol. There is this cliche Germans were very eager and conscientious. Maybe this is even true compared to the work ethics in other countries. But seemingly we don't work that much. But working more does not necessarily lead to more productivity.

I am always stunned when I hear who few vacation one has in other countries. Don't get me wrong I am a mental wreck I could never work an average job even in Germany. I probably cannot even work part-time. Probably will lead to my suicide. My lefty friends always complain how exhaustive the lives of adults are. Way less free-time and way more responsibilities. I wish I could become a responsible citizen but I am too fragile.

I find it weird why many Americans accept such hard working conditions. Bad health care, not much vacation, companies try to stop unions, no good welfare system in case you get ill. Sounds like a pretty bad deal for me. I know other countries have it worse. But the US is so rich. Why do the average workers have to suffer this much?

The way it is in European countries isn't all that sustainable. See Greece. They worked very little until their quasi-socialist economy collapsed in on itself, and now they're ranked above the US in terms of hours worked. The rest of the EU is next.

And 40 hour work weeks are completely reasonable (The average comes out to less than 40 hour work weeks in that study). I can crawl out of bed at 8:30, get to work by 9, and leave at 5 and have the entire afternoon to myself. Then I don't have to work the weekends. 40 hour workweeks are easy and convenient. I worked almost 40 while in school.

It's nice to know our society is so privileged that 40 hour work weeks has gained the moniker "workaholic" lol.

I used to work 60. It was tough, but mostly because I started at 5am. But it helped me get ahead.

I understand mental health getting in the way. I've been derailed by depression multiple times, and that completely eroded my savings. In the US, mental health issues are covered by unemployment too.

I mean what other options do we have but to stay and put up with the crap of our own countries? Immigrating to Germany or the EU is so draining and next to impossible in some countries unless you have the money and means. Even if you speak the language it's hard to get a visa. I speak German and would love Germany, but I don't know if I would necessarily be happy for the rest of my life. I've lived there before for a short time when I was a student and it was nice but I was extremely lucky because it was an international city with Erasmus students so it was a friendly environment. I heard other parts of Germany are not really like that and it can get pretty lonely.
And if there's still the probable chance of feeling suicidal once you immigrate, what's the point? Lol it's harder to buy guns in the EU.

I don't like the US. It's a dystopia for sure. The EU is far better in terms of social benefits and basic rights. And you don't have all these religious nuts in positions of power like you do here.
But the only solace I can find is that it's not impossibly difficult to buy a gun in the US unless you're in a super liberal state like California. But even then, it's not impossible impossible as it seems to be in the EU.

My husband works much more than 40 hours to support myself and our infant son. He has to work 40 hours plus 12-25 extra hours doing extra jobs. If he only worked 40 hours, our rent would cost 65% of his total salary. Childcare is unaffordable; it would eat up my entire salary If I were to get a job, and schools have a lockdown, threat and/or gunmen anywhere in my region in what appears to be a weekly basis, so I actually don't ever want my son to be in school anymore EVER. Here in the US I will legally homeschool.

Because the top tier of wage earners gets bigger? With all the proposals for a 4 hour work week no wonder those working regular jobs are workaholics. Another word for the financially disadvantaged, like faint praise. Gives off "surely your parents left you something" vibes.

Not that long ago, people worked even 80 hours a week.

But yes, nometheless americans are raging workaholics and we slavic nations are working rageaholics.
