-I am single and not on the dating market because my physical ailment makes it tough to meet new people, so I can't relate to any romantic songs.

-My health keeps getting worse month over month so songs about hope, religion are all hollow .

-Going vacationing, clubbing is not possible because of my physical ailment. I can't relate to any party/upbeat songs .

Any song which is positive turns me off because my life is tragic and the song reminds me of this contrast .

The only songs I listen to are those which have tragedy as a theme . Like "Suicide is painless" , "Boulevard of broken dreams".
Is it just me ?

This is too relatable except for how much music,I've found artist who have a good mix of sad songs for me and happier songs for when people ask about it. I understand why people listen to more positive music but I never can because similarly I just can't relate to it.

I used to watch a lot of video stuff on youtube incl listening to music but when I was deeply depressed due to massive failure again last May, I stopped everything, didn't watch videos, didn't listen to music, nothing. I was just not interested. This is slowly recovering and I listen to music sometimes or watch sth sometimes but by far not as much as I did before.

If I only listened to pop music, I'd have given up on music too. Nowadays I outright avoid songs with lyrics because 95% of the time they make me feel more depressed. A lot of people sing about their life experiences, but I don't have a lot of those experiences as a depressed person so they always just make me feel more alien compared to "normal."

Now I only listen to small indie artists who make music without lyrics, though indie artists are a mixed bag. It's hard to find stuff you enjoy.

Do you like Classical music? I listen to soundtracks a lot. They are good for fitting all kinds of moods. Know what you mean about love songs though. I either can't relate or feel sad that I probably wanted to experience all that at one point.

Most music is irritating to me personally especially anything upbeat/positive in any way so your feelings are understandable. I could never see anything to be positive about in this hellish reality anyway, this world is such a cruel place filled with endless suffering that's always undesirable to exist in.

I used to love music. Kept me going. Now it's just background noise to get drunk to. Thought music was magic and transcendental. Now I just think of it as emotional manipulation and a sales tactic. Makes me sad. I miss how it used to be

I feel the same way about listening to songs and watching videos on YouTube. I've just noticed a drastic decline in doing both activities over the years as things have reached a screeching halt being stuck in my room to rot away and be alone. Songs and videos just seem to remind me how much of a failure I am to myself and others.

I listen to a lot of classical. But lately also boygenius. Somehow songs about sadness make me feel happy. Music has been such a big part of my life since I was 12 years old that it'll probably be the last thing to go, and then I'll go.

I think music is my last resort, when I stop enjoying it that's the final straw (considering everything else). I've been watch lots of youtube stuff (not music) and have recently listening to music more. I basically make it concert to concert and even on my crap days music can at least keep me breathing. Sorry to hear it's gotten to this point for you.

how can you claim that music doesn't do anything for you when the only songs you name are a green day tune and a TV theme song; i.e. products ranging on the 100+ million listens and tens if not hundreds of thousand dollars worth of profit for both artists and labels, it's like attempting to shred a peel, giving up, and proclaiming that's all fruit has to offer. you just haven't found your artists yet. if you don't have the energy or will to find them, then don't.

You are not alone my friend. Music has always been an important part of my life but whenever my depression flares up the enjoyment just disappears. I lose interest in all the songs I normally love and exploring new genres/artists is not exciting anymore. Sometimes I worry that my passion for music may never come back.

Try listening to INSTRUMENTAL music. Basically music but without lyrics. Ever since there are so many options on YouTube, I stopped listening to most songs with lyrics, or ones with people singing in it. As like you said, its not easy to relate to many of them. Give it a try. Just type "Instrumental" or "BGM" (background music) on YouTube. It made my music experience better ever since

Hi there. I often listen to music because it makes me feel better. Maybe you like Dark Wave music, it's very dark (as the name says) and also depressive. But there are different artists with different moods. If you want I can send you some artists and you can see if you like em!

Oh that's so awful 😞 I'm sorry u have to go thru this missing out on important things in life. I think many of us here can relate. I mean the issues may vary but the end result is the same. This will not help much to say probably, but do u get any enjoyment from anything in your life currently? As a youth I got to do all the things u are missing out on. I was beautiful when young but had autism so it still caused serious problems for me and major heartache, loss, in those years. I can tell u from experience that some of the things that we yearn for are truly overrated. While u are young u see some of these things with rose tinted glasses because we don't yet have the life experience to see how empty or fleeting some of these experiences are. The majority of adult life pretty much sucks once reality of this world hits. For some people this happens sooner and some later but it will happen to everyone. The best thing I can tell u, is not to compare your situation to anyone else. God is aware of what u are dealing with. There's a verse in the Bible: it goes something like… those who are first in this life shall be last in the next life. Those who didn't get to have a life in this life will be getting the life we missed out on in God's kingdom. If u can try to believe in this, because it is true. It will help u to endure until we get to go to that place. U will not be disabled there, no aging, and we will have a spirit body, but will still be able to eat and enjoy life. This world although it was created by God is not dominated by God. It is controlled by Satan and this why so much unnecessary suffering happens here.

Yup, in fact listening to music about parties, romance, good times etc and songs about sex makes me rage. Call me shallow but that's the type of stuff I care about in life and I can't have it. I just want some pleasure out of life and I can't fucking stand listening music that reminds me that other people get to have those things.

Musicians make their bag by invoking a strong emotional response from their audience. The songs are carefully designed that way . Not that there's anything wrong with that but it is a sales tactic . That's a great way to think about it .
