About one month ago my mum got me guinea pigs (i still live her), because she thought that having pets would improve my mental health.
And i really do love them, they're so sweet, but most days i can't get myself to do something with them. I try to clean their cage at least once week and to give them food daily, but recently I really haven't been caring much about them because I can't really can't care about myself neither. They deserve so much better than to live with someone like me as their owner.
I can't just give them away to someone else because my mum thinks that I'm doing fine, and by giving away my guinnies she would get really concerned, and angry because she payed a part of the costs for them. I know it sound incredibly selfish, but I sometimes wish that they would die peacefully in their sleep so that I wouldn't have to look after them anymore. I am a horrible person for wanting this, I know. These sweeties deserve a loving owner, who spends much time with them, gives them the best food, and takes care of their health and hygiene. Not an asshole like me.

Just a few questions— sorry if it's been answered but it's hard to tell

Did you ask your mom for a pet? Recently or in the past? Or did she just straight up assume a pet would help your mental health?

I've had it happen before, where I tell my mom I want something and she would get it for me months or even years later. Parents randomly hold on to these things.

But also— if she did just randomly get you a pet (even if you asked for one in the past) that's a bit irresponsible on her part for not asking right beforehand. I've been in a similar predicament where I asked my mom for a lizard when I was way way younger and she got me on for my 17th birthday.

I had to talk to my mom about it and rehome it to my bestfriend (who she still has and takes care of).

If your mom is worried for monetary loss, then maybe she can agree with selling it to a trusted person or someone who is interested? Like coworkers or other people you have a connection with.

I know it sucks and know what you're dealing with. It's a lot of guilt and sadness that just adds on to your depression. I hope you find a solution to your pet dilemma soon :)

Hi! Thanks for your nice reply. And well, my mum got me a pet shortly after I got out of psych ward. She then asked me if I wanted a small pet, and I responded with "Maybe", but I guess with a very enthusiastic tone. I didn't knew that she was so serious about it until she build the whole cage herself, and when I began to reconsider it was already too late.

And thanks for your advice. I gotta get the courage to tell my mum about it, but when I did I'll look for someone who will take good care of them!
