it isn't my fault that whenever I try to talk to others or make friends that they end up hostile or straight up disrespect me to my face.

Eventually I have to become a recluse because of all the negativity thrown at me. Social media just made this all 1000x worse.

I had no choice in this matter.

Society is the problem and the people in it. A person that is constantly rejected and shit on will develop mental illness and "choose" to withdraw. It's not really a choice though, is it?

Haha. Yeah I'll take care of myself. I'll take care of all of these problems because I'm gonna kill myself.

I don't think society causes all mental illness. But certainly some types in many cases. Depression, anxiety, some personality disorders. Hell maybe even the other ones. My therapist believes childhood trauma caused my psychosis and mood issues. Environment affects biology.

It starts with a genetic "predisposition". Aka your genetic mental personality. As you enter normal things like school and activities it is clear when you will fail in life. Mental illness just occurs because a person cannot obtain what they need in life socially.

If Someone is predisposed to a paranoid schizo mindset then it will slowly build momentum since childhood (especially if your parents are worthless) until you are full blown schizo due to the rejection and isolation that you have kept quiet about for years.

Now if your parents are successful and awesome then it can be avoided. But it's likely they are not.

Certain phenotypes are unsuccessful in society and were doomed for a miserable life or failure from the start.

It's way more complex than that. Society (environment) can certainly aggravate, exacerbate, and cause mental illness to be expressed—but it doesn't cause it in people not prone to illness.

You will never hear things that are potentially nihilistic facts coming out of academia or research or journalism. When you see the truth it becomes much worse.

Doctors or researchers who hold societal positions of trust will never publish things that may insinuate certain politically incorrect facts about life.

It boils down to that it is a cruel ape-like culture rat race where if you have had your legs broken genetically or mentally in the start - you will more than likely fail and become a recluse or suicide.

I agree with its-about-time in that it is difficult to attribute all mental illness as being caused by society. Just like physical ailments that afflict the human race, the "human condition" if you will, I think there are physiological links to much of the mental illness in society. Like real chemical imbalances in the brain. And certainly childhood trauma can be a cause, too, which would really be considered environmental, as in your immediate environment. I think anyone is susceptible to depression, though, depending on one's life circumstances and events. How one gets treated by society can certainly have an impact on one's well-being.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Not everybody with a shitty childhood will go on to develop that kind of mental illness, but if you're predisposed to it and have a shitty childhood, it'll probably rear its ugly head. Or even a shitty adulthood. Stress is a well researched trigger for underlying mood disorders and psychosis. That stress just happened to start in childhood for me, so I started having symptoms early at 13. And experiencing that kind of thing leads to more stress. A never ending cycle. Ugh. I'm feeling particularly done today. I feel I'm about to start crying.

I think that being depressed can be a perfectly rational response to lifes circumstances, it does not necessarily mean that the person is mentally ill or that the problem is them, rather that life is the problem. Some people really can be so cruel and can make everything worse. I always see it as best to stay away from people.
