I live in a Scandinavian country where the winters are cold, lakes frozen and the woods huge. I have kept myself alive for the people i love, pushed away the darkness and done everything in my legitimate power to accept my life and my past. I just cant. I dont want to do this anymore. I am broken beyond repair, and too weak to take on the world. Sorry about this little rant. As i mentioned earlier i want to freeze to death. Simply bring a bottle of whiskey, down the whole fucking thing and hammer a big hole in the ice and dip in Titanic style. I guess i will go under within 5 minutes, drown and die. Does anyone know if this is painful? Is there any way i can make this as easy as it can be? Thanks. Love

Drowning is an awful way to die. Water in your lungs burns like fire, ironically.

The liquor will not necessarily save you from feeling it. Your body will do anything and everything to prevent drowning, including pulling you back to consciousness.

If you wish to freeze to death, you might be better off just taking a drunken nap in the snow.

There are lots of threads about this if you wish to explore.

I've thought about this as well. I think to solidify things (poor choice of words) I would like to CTB outside. So that way if one thing doesn't work, something else does.

As far as efficacy goes, I'm not entirely sure of how and what it takes to work.

Im gonna look them up and read, thanks. The drunken nap does sound better than drowning.

Some years ago, I was planning to go to the coldest snowy part of my country and have booze + sleeping pills + getting naked and then die!

However, I've read that the chances of surviving are kind high so, I guess it'll be hanging for me

Many people take their clothes off right before freezing to death. Apparently the body makes a last ditch attempt to warm itself by dilating the blood vessels. The delirious person feels hot, disrobes, then freeezes to death shortly afterwards.

we dont really have first hand reports but some people say its extremely cold then hot and then they pass out. from an outsider perspective this does look like a fairly painful way to go and the chances of survival seem to be higher since it takes hours to die. I don't know the circumstances to your situation though but is there any other method you could look into?

This is the way I imagined would be best to go. As long as you get your core body temperature to drop as quickly as possible then the body shuts down on its own, feelings and all.

I imagine it will be pretty painful. The ocean is quite cold here and it is physically pretty painful to stay in more than a minute or so.

That being said it sounds like a pretty cool way to go. I think people on here (myself included) are almost obsessed with avoiding pain when CTBing.

Life is painful, maybe death should be a bit painful too.

Yup, paradoxical undressing. Then there's another phenomenon in the last throes of dying where they try to burrow into something (terminal burrowing). Probably the body's last ditch attempt at survival.

If you're drunk or high it might not be as painful.

Yea, that's interesting. They think it's a primitive brain stem reflex.

So I guess the lesson from the article is drink lots of alcohol and wear something that will be hard to take off in a delirious state should one choose hypothermia. Better not to be found nude.

So this is going to come across weird because I cannot get into too many details without potentially exposing myself. I am a sponsored athlete in a sport that competitions can span days on end outdoors. I've competed in temps as low as -42 for 7.5 hours.

My barometer for pain is skewed because of what I do, but in my opinion the burning and general ability to give a fuck is gone after the first two hours or so. The brain fog is intense and real. A buddy of mine who didn't fare as well as I did at that particular competition was completely incapacitated in the first round, couldn't say his own name ffs. A lot of how fast it hits, in my anecdotal experience, is your body fat percentage. If you're lean, hypothermia obviously gets to work much quicker.

tl;dr- there are definitely worse ways to go.

It doesn't need to be freezing, I've read about this I think the user was BPD_LE whose friend died of hypothermia in the UK in June or July - fell asleep outside at night in the rain after downing drink and benzos.

Hypothermia in cold water is definitely faster than on the cold air, because of the thermal transfer mechanism. But SI is a bitch, especially when only a small hole in the ice is considered. Any combination of alcohol/benzos/sleeping pills is probably recommended (when one is knocked out, the SI shouldn't be an issue), but still it sounds pretty unreliable method to me. But I have to admit it was my method #1 for many years.

Drowning must be very painful, especially combined with low temperature. Alcohol and/or drugs should definitely speed up the process but it would be still a nightmare. Drowing in freezing water is a death that I wouldn't wish anybody had. There are less violent methods, you should focus on them instead.

From medical daily, headline reads: What Drowning Feels Like: Asphyxiation In Water is Silent But Deadly.

This is from the article and I found it to be.. well interesting: Hyperventilating from panic will make you breathe water and will cause a laryngospasm, a vocal cord spasm that will make it even harder to call for help because it blocks your airway to protect your lungs. As the drowning progresses, your body doesn't get enough oxygen and you lose consciousness, at which point your airway relaxes and your lungs fill up with water. Further going without oxygen, your body shuts down from brain damage and cardiac arrest.

And also this at the end of the article:
Your chances of survival are better if the water is cold, because hypothermia makes your body redirect oxygenated blood to its most important organs, meaning you can live longer on your limited oxygen supply.

This is probably valid for drowning. But comparing hypothermia when exposed to water vs. air, then in general, 'Cold water dangerously accelerates the onset and progression of hypothermia since body heat can be lost 25 times faster in cold water than in cold air.'
E.g.

You're better off just laying in the water and letting hypothermia take you. As in, make sure you're actually touching the bottom of a lake/river so you don't slip in and drown, because as someone else already pointed out, drowning in a bad way to go.

Hypothermia however can be very quick, depending on how cold the water is, because the cold water literally saps your body heat away from you. If drowning is a concern strip your clothes and go lay in the snow instead. Will take longer than sitting in water though.

Alcohol may help over-all by keeping your survival instinct at bay. Honestly if Partial doesn't work out for me, letting the cold take me is my second option.

I don't think it would be painful at all. One time I passed out on a bench after drinking waaaay more than I could handle. It was snowing outside and fucking cold but honestly, I didn't even care^^". My friends eventually managed to wake up and drive me back home, but if it wasn't for them I would've probably died, so....
