Okay, i've been asked to help a few people "verify" their SN source and the aquarium test is better than the blood test, so i'm just gonna make a thread about both. also, nitrate passes the blood test.

normal nitrite and nitrate need to be regularly controlled in an aquarium. as such, there are tests for them. luckily for us, these also pick up on sodium nitrate!

because of this, we know that SN can and will be picked up by aquarium test strips. i went through an amazon / google deep dive to find the best tests, so here are my 3 suggestions - these are overkill, by the way, but they should give accurate results:
Amazon product ASIN B000255NC8 Amazon product ASIN B096V33QWBGeneric monitor has a lot fewer reviews, but is apparently reliable.
i'm also putting a nitrate test on this, because that way you can test to see how much of your nitrite has gone bad - don't worry about this too much.

in the OG thread nw7 used one of the "× in 1" tests, but these are apparently unreliable... for aquarium people. test strips from your local pet shop will probably work for our purposes :)

once you've got your test strips, you'll want to open up your SN, measure out about a gram, very quickly close your SN, then mix it into a liter of water. test one of the strips/tests on a second, clean liter of water, and check that the results are 0. then, mix 5mls of your contaimied water into the liter of water, and test both jugs. if your SN is good, it should read for max amount of nitrite and 0 nitrate. - if there is some nitrate, don't worry! it's probably just degraded nitrite. however, if it tests for high nitrate and low nitrite, your SN is bad and you need to buy a new batch or from a different brand.

since i'm planning on sticking around a bit longer, once my SN arrives i'll order my own reccomended tests and test my (IC) brand SN - that'll be in like 2 months.


OKAY, BUT HOW DO I KNOW IF MY BRAND'S GOOD?
If you're in the USA, CCS is okay! if you're overseas, IC it will be!

but if you don't have the cash for IC and you've found a decent enough looking website....
1. is it nitr ite?
2. does the brand sell other products? i.e a chemist should sell a million different chemicals, a food processing place should probably have a side gig, etc.
2a. if it's "black market", it's probably a scam.
2b. if it's a commerical supplier, will they actually sell to you? some will require licenses/company names.
3. google the brand name. can you find reviews? a facebook page? how long have they existed?
4. email the company asking if it's aquarium-safe nitrate.
5. reverse image-search the image used for the SN - this is more effective on stuff like cute anime outfits, but a certain blue-fading-into-yellow labelled "SN" product has been posted multiple times.
6. do the aquarium strip test.

feel free to DM me for the IC and CCS sources, and/or to take a second eye over the source you've found! i can't promise that i can 100% tell a scam, but i can at least give a second opinion.

Hello, I'm sorry to bother you if you're still there I just want to ask. Just for some information I live in a third world country. I have found an online provider that have SN. Yes, it is nitrite. And the provider sell a wild range of other chemical too for like a lab. The problem is it's very cheap. Like 3.40$ (80k vnd/my currency). It does say 99% on the label. I have not buy it yet so I couldn't test it. I just want to be sure before I buy so I don't keep my hope up.

i've heard that a lot of other countries (outisde america, the UK, canada, australia and NZ, etc) have fewer restrictions on SN, so it might be legit. i would look to see if they have a social media or other page that shows they exist beyond their main website. but if it's a local(ish) chemical supplier in a country where SN isn't seen as dangerous, there is every chance that something used for curing meat is sold pretty cheaply!

...also, make sure you don't need a license or company name to buy from them. probably not, since you can see the price.

i would test to be safe if you do end up buying it. still, the cost of the SN and a local pet store's test strip is probably cheaper than shipping IC from canada, so i'd give it a shot.

Sorry I'm not following. What does nitrite's/nitrate's reactivity have to do with turning blood brown? according to you, nitrite's instability makes it turn into nitrate but it has nothing to do with turning blood brown. Just because nitrate is a different form of nitrite doesn't necessarily mean it turns blood brown.

I'm no expert, but I think you are good to go. My guess is that it is normal to find high levels of both when it's high purity SN. Don't take my word for it though, just a hunch.

This test or blood test can give you a good guess but I dont trust either enough to give you a gaurentie of 95% or higher. Trusting the supplier is more important without lab grade equipment. Why losing trusted sources really hurts my heart. Things become more of gamble. Theres never a gaurentie. Atleast with failed sn the damage risk is low. My suggestion is keep vitamin c close by just incase you wake up and dont feel the need or desire to go to the er as a back up "antidote". Although if failed sn it is best to get medical help.

Here's another aquarium test. Moderately high nitrate but off the charts nitrite. I'm really at a loss here. Nitrate is 3rd down and nitrite underneath.

What if I trust the source but both have highest nitrate and nitrate I think I opened to often.. can I still use it? According to Vizzy I can.. see this post last two pictures are mine
