It seems to be said that I should be able to feel a pulse where they are but I can't feel anything . Any tips ?

They are in the groove between your trachea and the muscles on the side of your neck.

The carotids run along either side of your neck, rooooughly between the windpipe and the muscle that tenses when you turn your head (sternocleidomastoid, if you want the name). You can usually feel the pulse by pressing gently just beside the larynx, around your mid neck. If you press too hard or in the wrong spot, you might miss it.

Make a U shape with your fingers (thumb, index, the other one i forgot the name of) and wrap it around your throat... Depending on the size of your neck if you feel around for a bit you should be able to feel the pulsing. You can also do it with your entire hand (although its a little harder to pin-point the location this way). Feel the front of your neck specifically, don't look for the pulsing at the side.

So many figures on this site and instructional videos and I still can't do it right. I can feel something pulsing with my fingers but when I've tried compressing it or using a shoelace either nothing happens or one time it made my face hurt.

Figured I'd screw this up too. If I was less of a failure I wouldn't need to ctb.

I'm sorry to hear that. What method are you using?

A shoelace for partial hanging isn't enough, for example. It's not a good material and it is too thin.

With your own hands it would also be impossible to compress the carotid arteries, they are deep in the neck.

I have a good advice if anyone wanna learn how to do hanging fully.
Make a noose knot or poacher's knot. Place the noose around your neck while standing, placing it above your Adam's apple, and the knot in the center of your back neck. Then pull the rope up with your hands to apply pressure to the carotid arteries. You don't even have to pull very hard. It's important that you pull on the rope and do so for several seconds, as this will almost cause you to faint. This will let you know that you've properly compressed the carotid arteries.
Important: You'll almost faint quite quickly during this test. As soon as your vision starts to go black, you should immediately undo the loop and remove it.

All the instructions say if you feel them in your neck and compress them you can make yourself pass out. Why can't I do that? I'm so confused. The instructions said shoelaces were good

I'll make a brief summary, maybe it will help...

In Partial Hanging, the more of your weight you can apply, the better (like in standing or kneeling posture)

I recommend reading the info and looking at the drawings with all postures in these threads:

📌 Calculation of tension exerted on a ligature in incomplete/partial hanging

📌 AreWeWinning's detailed explanation about the positions in Partial Hanging

About feeling discomfort and cannot lose consciousness...

• If you feel a lot of pressure in your head, as if it's about to explode, it means you're just compressing the jugular veins. And not the carotid arteries.

The goal is to block the carotid arteries, which supply oxygenated blood flow to the brain. They are deeper in the neck, and blocking them correctly will allow you to lose consciousness quickly (in less than 15 seconds).

• Points to analyze (what could be wrong?)

- it could be the position of the body (you are not applying enough of your weight)

- the position of the knot in the ligature (the noose knot with the stopper knot should be behind the neck, in the center)

- the position of the ligature (rope) in your neck (goes under the jaw. More or less at the height of the Hyoid Bone, which is above of the Adam's apple)

- the rope is too thin, it hurts or doesn't apply enough pressure. You will need to buy a thicker one.

I don't have an adam's apple and nothing in my neck feels like a bone.

Thank you for trying to help, but I'm just not smart enough for things like this.

What about the ligature strangulation method??? :/.

You don't want to pressurize just anywhere along the carotid artery.

The best spot for rapid loss of consciousness is the bifurcation of the carotid arteries - it's that little bulb where the carotid splits in to the internal and external carotids. This is the sweet spot.

If you feel around close to your Adam's Apple, the pulse should feel considerable stronger in this area.

It is my belief that a lot of people have problems with occluding the carotid arteries because they are attempting to dip their toes in the water, ie., slowly compressing the carotids. Reading the hanging/night night/ligature megathreads, it doesn't appear to work this way for *most* people. The carotids need to be squeezed quickly, and it's only when people really quickly apply pressure that they are successful in completely occluding the carotid arteries. (referring to partial/night night/ligature here, not full suspension). I am not a doctor or scientist, but I suspect the slow application of pressure doesn't work most of the time because the carotids are pressurized.
