LONG RANT, SKIP TO TL;DR IF YOU WANT
Me: *repeatedly reports and dislikes videos advertising porn and 18+ videos on YouTube shorts*
YouTube:
A popular YouTuber: *says "damn" in their video*
YouTube: BEKIDFRIENDLY
YouTube kids: *allows overstimulating videos that destroy the attention spans of kids and worsen behavior*
YouTube:
YouTube kids: *allows videos of people dressed up like Elsa and Spider Man getting pregnant, and animations of Mickey and Minnie mouse eating literal shit* (look up "Elsagate" for more info on that)
YouTube:
YouTubers who make actually educational and age appropriate content for kids that isn't causing negative side effects: *exist*
YouTube: COCOMELONCOCOMELONCOCOMELON
YouTubers "reviewing" lingerie: *literally over half naked showing their asses and tits while in lingerie*
YouTube:
-----
I mostly watch YouTube Shorts, but always get these fucking spam videos promoting their porn or whatever. Every time, I pause it instantly, report for sexual content, then go to the comments and report comments with the links for spam and sexual content. The videos are always put into nonsense tags and have a thousand filters and random ass titles. If at least one REAL PERSON actually reviewed those videos, there wouldn't be porn getting advertised to people who could be under 18
Small and spam channels always just fly under the radar, and it's ridiculous. YouTube is watching other creators (mainly ones that have a big following, but not too big) and constantly demonizing them for even saying "shit" because it's "not kid friendly". Most of the YouTubers in question aren't even for kids, and don't claim to make content for kids.
On the other hand, YouTube lets "kids" channels get away with anything (I won't go into details about the whole Elsagate shit right now, just look into it yourself if you want).
When I was really young and allowed only on YouTube kids, I never watched those "SPIDER MAN AND ELSA HAVE A BABY" or those "DRINKING THE GAY POTION AT 3AM (GONE WRONG!!!!!)" videos (but I did watch the videos that hated on those channels), I grew up on actual content.
The first thing I remember being really into was Lucky Penny Shop (I just looked him up and saw he posted 3 days ago, but I watched him over 6 years ago) and Minecraft YouTubers like PopularMMOS, DanTDM, and, of course Stampy!! A few years later, I was allowed on regular YouTube, and watched some art videos, Stampy, and Markiplier. Now, whenever I watch longer videos, it's mostly Markiplier or GTLive.
Looking back, the videos I saw were wonderful, actually good kids content that didn't melt my brain. Access to millions and millions of videos and what I chose from those really has influenced me. The art videos are what got me into art and drawing, and now I'm creating art that I never thought I'd be able to. Minecraft YouTubers like Stampy and Grian taught me how to be creative and I wouldn't be able to build the Minecraft builds I do today if it weren't for them. Markiplier got me into horror games and has influenced my sense of humor. GTLive and all the Game Theory channels taught me how to analyze data, make connections, taught me math skills above my grade level, and greatly expanded my vocabulary.
What I'm trying to say, is that when my brain was still being developed, I was exposed to content that
1) Enabled me to be creative and think outside the box
2) Educated me in a way that kept me engaged and excited to learn
3) Extertained me while not overstimulating my brain or eroding my attention span
But, along with the good, there was also the bad. The internet exposed me to some sexual content when I was very young, which resulted in hypersexuality and my eventual fetishization/sexualization of traumas, but this isn't directly YouTube's fault, it's just the internet.
What IS YouTube's fault, is what it's doing to current generations. The babies and toddlers of today. Cocomelon, PinkFong, whatever else is out there. It's bright, loud, flashy, and it doesn't stop. Parents have reported their children becoming violent and even in some cases hurting themselves when they don't have access to Cocomelon. (I use Cocomelon as a blanket term for content that is similar to it, bright, flashy, etc.)
I even have a little story to tell to prove my point. I was on a trip with a friend, their mom, dad, and little brother. The entire (around 5 hours) drive there, Cocomelon was playing. My friend's little brother was GLUED to the phone, and began screaming, kicking, and throwing things when an ad played. I picked up the phone each time and skipped every ad so my friend would have a break (they're constantly bullied by their parents and brother, and the other family that lives with them do nothing to stop it)
My neice, who is around 1 year old, doesn't stop watching PinkFong, even though my "mum" and sister know exactly the kind of behavioral and mental issues it can cause. My neice screams when she doesn't have her iPad, and even knows how to work it (change games, open YouTube Kids, etc)
And why is this all YouTube's fault? It's not 100% on them. First off, people will always find loopholes. Second off, parents should be held responsible for what content they let their children consume. Third, none of these business want to stop making money. It hurts kids, but the jackasses who run Cocomelon or any other YT accounts don't care as long as they're getting paid.
Now to complain about YouTube. One issue is the censorship of genuinely good kids channels, like the ones that educated and helped raise me as a kid with undiagnosed autism and parents who rarely engaged with me
The next issue is how their reporting system doesn't do shit. I don't think I need to explain why "lingerie reviews" and spam videos that say "watch me play with my pussy in the comments!" should be allowed on a platform that claims to be kid friendly. I personally think that YouTube Kids should be reworked, allowing real content (not Cocomelon) for kids age 5-13, and YouTube should be a place for people 13+.
The third issue (5 in total) is kids running channels. I'm not talking about the parents that exploit their kids for money, either. I'm talking about the 7 year old girls that take their moms phone and do inappropriate dances. This is more of a TikTok problem, but I've seen it on YouTube too. Children can easily get groomed and predators could spread their videos around. This obviously would be hard to fix (I'm not completely blaming YouTube for that) since lying about your age is so easy nowadays, but it's still an issue.
Fourth issue, censorship of channels that aren't for kids. I already went over this, but it's just about channels with adult or dark humor or curse words being demonetized because they're "not kid friendly" even though the channels never claim to be.
Last issue... Elsagate. (Slight TW) It's hard to explain, but it's content aimed at children that is very not okay for children. Videos that show kid's characters, mostly Elsa, Spider-Man, Minnie and Mickey mouse, and Peppa Pig, doing things that aren't kid safe. Birth videos, use of drugs, animations depicting kidnapping, eating fecal matter, drinking urine, murder, etc. This content just flies completely under YouTube's radar (AKA a red piece of paper taped over a dollar store flashlight) and is even on YouTube Kids. Not sure how much has been done about it recently, though, so correct me if this stuff has been getting taken down.
TL;DR
I grew up on quality content on YouTube, kids these days aren't. (And more shitty stuff about YouTube)
