Someone in my head but it's not me

I guess they used to call my dreams night terrors. I used to wake up soaking wet with sweat and terrified. I eventually got used to them and finally gained control in them. Now I get some kind of morbid enjoyment out of them. They are kind of comforting if that makes sense. They are kind of scary but I know I'm dreaming and I can alter them.

Once every few weeks, they are usually dreams about me being bullied in school (it was more than 10 years ago and im grownass adult now) funny how it still follows me. in other dreams i hurt my perpetrators and waking up afraid of myself. The barely pleasants one is dreams of closeness that i yearn for, perhaps the most painful of bunch since waking up realizing there is noone beside you and noone finds you worthy enough to be loved.

I remember dreams maybe a few times a week but they are almost allways filled with anxiety. Sometimes, there's partial relief in waking up- at least initially.

I've never been too clear on what lucid dreaming is. As I understand it though- to have some control over what we dream. I can't seem to choose the subject. Although, I do frequently become suspicious that I am in fact dreaming during a dream and I'll maybe partially alter the narative if it's becoming too dangerous.

So, for example- I dreamt about a huge scorpion running around once but then- I conjured up my God father- who killed it. It was well casted really since in real life, he once squashed a wasp with his bare hands. But- I'll frequently do that- dream of something really frightening and then figure out a way of bringing it to a happier ending.

So, flying dreams also usually reach a stage where I start falling but, I always seem to float just before I hit the ground. Not sure I mitigate things consciously as such but, there is some awareness there.

During covid, I would dream about being on trains or buses and panic that no one was wearing a mask. Then, I'd realise it must be a dream. So- maybe I'm stuck in the very early phases of it.

I read once that to develop it further- you need to practice bringing yourself in and out of sleep at certain times but- I'm tired enough as it is. I don't want to be upsetting my sleep even more.
