About 6 meters or about 20 feet. If you buy that much you will end up with some left over to cover the keyhole. Not sure if it's airtight though.

not sure your situation or if you live alone or not, but you can usually twist off the smoke alarm and either disconnect the little plug thingy (if it is electric) or take out the batteries (if it is battery-powered)..
