how does the chat function work?

just a quick question about the chat function in this forum
as i understand it you have to post a secret amount of posts here to unlock it but i have got only about 9 messages and i am able to start a chat
but following to that i'd like to know if i will be able to see the response to said chat i started or if i won't be able to see anything before hitting that amount of posts?

It will start working after a certain period of time, not sure how much tho. I wondered the same and then chat popped on my screen =]
