tl:dr tips are welcome !!

sorry for shouting but this is pretty pressing

i live in the uk and today and tomorrow are RED WEATHER WARNING-marked by the met office. aka serious risk to life (and property). red weather warnings are very rare here. until now

starting by talking about the weather warning was partly conscious cause if you talk to someone from another country (especially if they use fahrenheit) 35 degrees celsius might not seem that strange to them. to an extent even here it doesn't sink in. people may liken it to 35 degrees in a more southern country where architecture etc is better built for that and/or where they've been on holiday so with no obligations.

here it is not so. it feels very humid a lot of the time. our buildings are not equipped for this, and that includes schools and hospitals. some schools have been closing early (around 12) this week. fun fact a hospital linked to the one i work at can't do injections because their injection room(s) are too hot. so until further notice if patients from there need an injection they'll have to come to this one, which is already overstretched to say the least. even if the doctors from there were to somehow go back and forth to perform injections here, do we have enough rooms? i wouldn't hold my breath
also urban heat island

also it might go up to 41 degrees
and the weather warning was updated today to extend by another 24 hours

in this lovely weather we're having, amid risk of train lines bending (fatal accidents have already happened, and train services have been reduced left, right, and centre, understandably), dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, other ill health (and it's not just people with, say, underlying conditions who are at risk - it's everyone), people are still expected to go to work. i tried to step out this morning (8am and it was already baking) and could not, and started to feel ill. was offered to work from home, tried for a bit, then had to stop because the heat's been too much for me to function.
i've also been barely able to write anything that requires much thought, or do research . writing here is fine but i'm also not providing anything of depth in this post or feeling much need for coherence as with the writing i actually want to do and for once have the time to since i've taken the day off. like 5 hours since i stopped working and next to nothing has been achieved yippee

writing this in recovery because - and anyone who's read my posts must have already gotten tired of how volatile i've been wrt my decision to ctb and its firmness - my beautiful friend slash angel i was honest with them in saying what i'd resorted to and why (the reasons i deserve to not continue life any longer but also why i felt like i couldn't face much future at all. part of the latter was heatwaves and how they keep coming and the knowledge that they will keep coming back. unfortunately even if we had a socialist revolution and a rationally planned economy worldwide tomorrow there would still be legacy emissions and also it's not coming tomorrow! and unfortunately we don't need to look long-term at all to see how the frequency of heatwaves and extreme weather, even just in the uk, will increase. another of the reasons was that since i told my family about the breakup they told me i will be moving back in with them (it basically wasn't a suggestion) which, to previous though not present fault of their own, would be like being sucked into a spiritual black hole and not one i feel like i can return to, and so i would rather not - on pain of death, as it turns out) - they started coming up with options to avoid moving back in with them, and it's tentative and we need to discuss more but what they've suggested so far has been more than i could fathom was possible
hence the angel designation
also they validated my difficulty with this heat and understood my fear

anyway YEAH i need tips for dealing with heat
my flat has ac so very very lucky but that and two fans are only proving enough for me to not lapse into heat exhaustion
i currently have a condition where my ankles retain water!!!1 quite easily so heat can make it difficult and sometimes properly painful to walk
i've closed blinds
i also got these cooling pads from boots - made for headaches / migraines but it works well if i put it on the back of my neck, works for hours
but it's still not enough !!
also am drinking cold drinks
any tips for how to actually cool down and / or stay sane are appreciated
would be nice to see the day that the solar panels sufficient to power london and paris are put to good use and not sitting idle in warehouses because they can't be sold for profit
and that day has not yet come

As someone who lives in a country that regularly breaks 32 degrees and with a humidity that makes it feel like 40+, our only option really is to just keep the AC on, so I guess you just need to keep the thing running at maximum whole day. Aside from that, if possible, try to stay still, if you can, and turn off yer lights

But if you have to go out for work and such... Well, all I can really say is to just wear white, get an umbrella or parasol, maybe pick up a portable fan, and hope for the best. You can do it!!

Take more than one bath a day, hydrate whenever possible (very important), always be near fans or ventilated areas.

that's ok!
yeah i looked it up, some say you can put ice or frozen water bottle in front of a fan and it'll distribute cool air around the room. don't know if it actually works but i might try it
yeah good suggestion i should get an ice pack and put it in the freezer. the cooling pads i bought are good for going out because you can stick it to your skin (not difficult/painful at all to take off though), but they aren't as cold as ice packs so if i'm at home i can use ice packs instead
and yeah holding frozen ice packs can hurt

sometimes it feels too hot to reach for water and i wonder if drinking water would really make a difference.. then i drink some and remember it does:) and true i've heard the same, that warm drinks are a lot better if you're trying to stay cool, some people i know will drink a lot of tea

yesss true over the wrists too .. washing dishes has suddenly become a lot more appealing :P
