  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I cannot answer both of your questions, but I can add this:

People under anesthesia do not feel pain. That is what anesthesia is. If you can feel pain, you're not fully anesthetized.

A medical coma - a coma on purpose - is not quite the same as surgical anesthesia. I do not know about the physical sensations one might experience. I have worked with people in comas, and some report that they heard sounds. Others report nothing and wake as if they had just fallen asleep.

It's not a satisfying answer, but I don't think anyone knows how it will be unless they have experienced it.

1) Anesthesia is MEANT to take away or reduce pain. However, people who awake from artificial coma sometimes report they dream things like having sticks shoved down their throats when they had a tubus during coma, so they must have been feeling something.
2) Possibly yes. More likely no. There is a lot of research on this, though, if you want better information, for a specific case, you might want to read some of it.

If there is no neural activity in the cortex, you do not exist either :) For example, a barbiturate coma draws an EEG pattern similar to brain death.

I think that, at worst, you might become vaguely aware of your surroundings for a few moments. But from what I've heard, it almost feels dream-like. You shouldn't feel any pain or discomfort at all.

Sorry I couldn't see any message. EEG is a device that displays neural activity in the brain.

I was given medication to keep me unconscious while I was on a ventilator. I'm not sure if that counts. I could feel the physical feelings of the tubes in my mouth but they didn't exactly hurt. There was no pain, just sensations
