I do think there's something in losing our belief in any kinda 'grand narrative'. In the past people had something bigger themselves to look to whether that be religion or even some of the political movements. In this post modern world noone really believes in anything, there's no truth. I think that pretty quickly leads to desperation. It reminds me of the Bloc Party suicide song SRXT-

Like a castaway on a warm ocean
Waiting for a purpose to rise
They say it's not becoming
For a boy my age

People now are still looking for some kinda meaning but end up clutching at straws. But I also think loss of community is a huge thing. I went to Burma a while back and the people in some of the rural villages just struck me as content. They had work, food, family and close community. The truth is we are not designed to live the way we do in the west.

26 here. After joining this site, I was surprised to know some people think people around my age bracket are too young to CTB.

The threat of terror or starvation has decreased while life expectancy had gone up , pretty much across the world . Some threats are echoed by the news , social media -- and alarmingly private messaging between friends . But people are genuinely worried about their prospects (and not just the materialistic ones) . It's rarely about what you have right now , but what you can have in the future . Can I , the "normal/simple" person , have a family? Not really . Even "impulsive suicides" are rarely due to an event -- but thinking of it as a disaster that will obliterate everything in the future . This is a common thread . The idea of 'no future ahead' is the core problem , almost always .

Previous generations had problems but not to such extent . Many boomers enjoyed an almost-free education and housing that was affordable. Sadly , working hard and being tough no longer guarantees one's future (unlike their times) . Research shows younger generations are living with their parents till the age of 40 not because they're spoiled but because they work/study and cannot afford otherwise . Some boomers focus on short-term hardships or materialistic comparisons of their time -- and miss that substantial imbalance and crucial long-term uncertainty (anxiety). Some of them refuse to listen , and their dismissal of these issues is a huge problem .

Bold statements sums up some of my worries. Looking at current situation, I don't think I'll have a bright future. Being jobless, almost-zero saving, some debts (at least only to my family), experiencing lots of unrequited love, no best friends. I don't know if I'll get a job again, or even able to afford my own place. Property prices are too ridiculous.

Where are you located? I was so sure I could never get a house after declaring bankruptcy, but I did, and only had to wait 3 years after. Not in that house now, but I was so proud to really have my own place!

I couldn't actually say because I was once one of them not too long ago, 31 here. There are some of us who are now older but have been suicidal since childhood. I would definitely say it has to do with the internet. The internet is huge and very accessible for more people, it's easy to learn so much about life and the world through it. Once you learn all the fucked up things about existence and see how hard and pointless life is, it's no surprise that there are lots of young people. Young people are also hormonal and more impulsive, they also have a lot of pressure on them to succeed, school is extremely tough, college girls are selling sex to pay for school. The internet is a display for everyone to show off their success and failures, it's tough. I'm glad I am not 18 right now...I would have hated to have my entire highschool life plastered all over the internet without my consent. I'm actually not that old, just a few years away from the younger generation, and I wished I had died many years ago. I regret being alive to live to 30. I want to be gone so bad but I don't have it in me to go actually harm myself unless it was guaranteed of course, which of course nothing is.

Well, I strongly believe in something, the environment, nature and animals, I always have. But that gets destroyed more and more and that leads to more desperation.
The truth is we are not designed to live the way we do in the west.
Indeed. I would have loved to live in a world that nature has made us for, a few thousand years ago. Unfortunately I have been born in the modern era, where everybody shall live, but no one cares how your quality of live is.

I don't think "the age bracket has gone down", as there are always some individuals in any cohort that want to commit suicide. Younger people are more internet-savvy which is why you see them here more than older people. I think this is just naivete on the part of the older generation, as they didn't grow up with the internet so couldn't easily connect with disenfranchised people. I see this with my grandparents a lot-- it shocks me sometimes how naive they are about the state of the world. I talk to my grandma sometimes about suicide and she genuinely cannot comprehend why anyone would want to end their lives.

So I've only been here a short time but in my limited time I've seen many young people wanting to ctb. It's actually been an eye opener for me, I hadn't realised so many relatively young people are finding life so difficult.

Maybe it's simply that younger people are more internet savvy and have found this forum? Or maybe the world has gotten so awful that people get sick of life much quicker? I don't really know but it saddens me that people want to die before they've had (or been granted) the chance to live a life.

Off topic a little bit but I recently watched a Netflix series called 'The Unabomber in his own words' which led me to his manifesto. Shockingly I agreed with almost everything he wrote! How life essentially reduces us to small, insignificant cogs in a giant machine which makes life unbearable.

Anyway, what are the thoughts on this? I'd be interested in what everyone thinks.

bless you for bringing up this question. i am perpetually disturbed by how many young people are ready to go. i always want to encourage them to give it a chance. just for a bit longer?

I think a lot of young people are losing hope fast I have noticed so many youngsters are ctb it's such a shame but everyone has there own reasons there are so many people and children with mental health problems as it just seems to be getting worse.

Congrats since that works for you despite the hardships! I prefer not to publicly reveal where I live, but basically I'm not from English-speaking countries. In my place properties prices are ridiculous, the more affordable ones mostly are too far from working places or stations. Need to spend 3-4 hours back and forth on traffic if your job is in the bigger city (where most job opportunities are available). That's also problematic if your wage is not too far from the minimum wage.
