Almost a year ago, I had realized a truth of life and us as people that since then has made me very numb and cynical with my life and the lives of others. This truth has been building up in the back of my mind for about a decade now.

That truth to me is the fact that... we as people are awful creatures, and I include myself into this as well. We're selfish, our entire history of existence is based on taking from others to survive. Even when I see people who claim they "love" their friends or "love" their SO, I just don't believe it's real love.

I will leave this as an opener for a possible discussion but I am curious if anyone else here has felt this low on humanity and what they would comment on it. Thanks for reading.

I do feel extreme negativity towards humans, but not to the point where I don't believe friendships or love isn't real, no.

For me it's more like humans are brainwashed to follow a system that only benefits a few and brings harm or misery to most people and even animals but they're too brainwashed to realise that the system is wrong.

From all the other creatures, we're the ones destroying our planet for paper that won't benefit us at all if the planet was ruined enough lol.

Not only that but poverty, wars, religious oppression etc it just makes me sick

I try to maintain a positive outlook on people as a whole. I really like to think that I'm an outlier. I try to see the good in everyone, and have absolute faith in the power of love and how real human connection can, for the most part, completely change someone for the better.

Granted, I speak from a really weird place, with a loving family and 2 failed relationships in 3 years. It's a weird balance, but one that's given me a really unique perspective and understanding that it's not the world that's the problem. It's not the everyday people I say good morning or good night to. It's not my friends or my loved ones, it's actually legitimately just me.

Love is real, and is the only reason I didn't punch my ticket years ago. But I understand that some people just either haven't felt love or aren't really compatible with it. And it sucks that I think I'm one of them.

I wouldn't be so negative. Man, like any other animal and really any other living creature, primarly cares about himself and always acts in function of himself; that is, he seeks and loves what brings him pleasure, flees and hates what brings him displeasure. Very often this involves exploiting other people, as man is a social animal. For example, a child will love their parents because they bring them safety, nourishment and comfort. After some time, of course, this love becomes independent from the prospects of advantages which had first caused it, and the child will start to love their parents for the simple fact they make him feel good, in a sort of Pavlovian dynamic. This is appliable to any human relationship, which is therefore always transactional. Very often material gainings are not even involved, for example you can love a friend because of the mutual psychological advantage your friendship bring you. But the fact love towards other people is born out of egotism doesn't mean that love is any less real or sincere.

I found at one point- as many other people have experienced here- that I wasn't a priority for anyone in life. Most of the people I cared for had others they cared for more and would put before me. Including family members. That gave me the sense that you can't rely on people. That it's very risky/ unwise to anyway.

It's not necessarily that any of them are bad people. More that they have- we all have, our own priorities. Priorities that likely benefit us. We side with the people that bring us the most benefits I suppose.

I think people are partially selfish, but it isn't necessarily something that defines them. Also some people are more selfish than others.
