It's possible if you come from a country with a higher cost of living going to another with a lower cost of living. SE Asian countries have a lot of expats from the US, Europe, and Australia who take what they have and move to Thailand or Vietnam. Of course the major hurdle is learning the language to be relatively useful, or just teaching English only to students is highly profitable.

Not the country itself, but did move across the country, twice, from one coast to the other, to start over.
But as a friend told me, then, "wherever you go, you take yourself with you." He was right.

Your thoughts and worries always travel with ...
But sometimes a new environment can also be a new opportunity. But you should have at least basic language skills, some reserves and know the basic conditions in the country.

I've thought of this often, even within the same country. But I can't run from my own mind or illnesses, although with my traumatic brain injuries, having a mind may not last very long anyway. Still tempted to give it a try, and if I had enough money and could take my wee beasties with me (my pups), I might just give it a go.

I moved from a really shitty area in North America to the UK shortly after hitting adulthood. I put all my chips into this because I have nothing left in my home country.

There were not enough labor regulations, and I couldn't afford to attend university in my country without a conditional scholarship that was always being held above my head. It would be lost if I made a single mistake.

No one would hire me in my home country because I am disabled. I do not qualify for benefits there because the criteria is unnecessarily stringent. If I managed to get incredibly lucky (after spending thousands on a half decent lawyer and putting myself through hell so the government will believe how fucking sick I am) I would never be allowed to own a car, have savings, or get married.

If I had stayed there, I would have been fucked the rest of my life without a doubt. Cultishly religious, completely dried up economy, sky high rates of hard drug use, homelessness, suicide, addiction, etc. As I've said, many of my family members did ctb. That area is hopeless and I couldn't make it anywhere else in the states either due to the high cost of living and lack of connections.

Said fuck it and got accepted to university in the UK, placing all bets on my partner not leaving me, because I genuinely had nothing left to lose. Paying for my degree will take all of my savings, so it was a huge gamble. My only family member had to help me out immensely as well.

I'd say this sort of decision is a last resort. I am far happier in the UK, but I still want to die. Foreigners get treated like rubbish here.

@KuriGohan&Kamehameha. You are brave - to leave all that is known, no matter how bad, in my view is brave. While I would love to do this, I am older and permanently damaged with a condition that will slowly deteriorate over time. So the thought of doing this is a nothing but a dream for me. The fact you did it, not matter the reason? Brave < 3

Nope, but I really thought of doing it.

However, I realized that my country is not the reason why I'm suicidal so, I'll want to ctb everywhere I go. For that reason, I'd better stay here and find out what to do.

I want to move to a country where euthanasia is legal such as The Netherlands where there is a lot of acceptance towards ending one's life. Maybe then I could finally get the peaceful death I desire.

I moved to the other side of the world just over 7 years ago as had dual nationality and the opportunity arose with nothing holding me back. The only downside was leaving my immediate family behind who I am close to. But i had no regrets and have been much happier here in general and wouldnt go back.

However, I still suffer from my depression and whilst the relapses have been manageable, I have recently had a severe breakdown, the worst since I went to hospital 16 years ago. However, it has nothing to do with living here and may well have happened a lot sooner if I was still in my home country. I have no regrets about moving and think it helped me grow as a person.

I sometimes wish I could go to Southern Europe. I had the chance to live there temporary and I loved it... Living in the Northern Europe really takes a toll on my well being. But I have no money, no means to move out...

Yes, many times. South America, Europe, Africa, Asia. You're right--we're always waiting to greet ourselves wherever we go. My last attempt at living abroad taught me what I always knew--that I am the problem. I'm not meant for living. Hope your attempts turn out much better.

I've always wanted to move to another country but I have no skills and I can't even make it here so how would I be able to live in another country and pay american dues (expat tax)... It's depressing... Like I'm not even worthy of leaving America.

The only time I left the country I was so tempted to just stay and be homeless there and see what happens. The weather there wasn't good for that type of life though... Probably wouldn't have the balls to anyway with the fear of being an illegal alien forever.

I have moved a lot, not to other countries but to other regions. My problems do catch up with me but it's been worth it regardless. I get to meet new people, try new things, have some excitement, new perspectives etc... Basically food for my ADHD brain. One of the things that's kept me going all this time. I hope to take an island trip or trip to Australia maybe next year. And remember, there's no limit to how often you can move. You can just keep starting over.

When I was working, I decided to live in Japan and was there for three-years. It didn't work for me, but everything was there - I had enough money to be comfortable, learning a new language, the excitement, I could see and feel the genuine possibility for real change. It just didn't take as well as I'd hoped. At the same time, Guatemala's not exactly the definition of stress the way a career in Japan is. Obviously it could be simpler, more peaceful. Check it out, if things don't work out? South America's a beautiful place to pass in.

I did this very recently, moving from the UK to NL.

It's nice being in a new place, but to a large extent I still feel the same way I did when I was in the UK but now I have a smaller support circle.

You're taking the wrong approach. The best approach is to work a high paid but annoying / "work all the time " job if you are in a rich country. For example offshore oil worker , over the road truck driver , etc. if you are in a rich country you do this for 5-10 years and then flee your dysfunctional country for a tropical paradise in a cheap country. The assets you acquired should be enough to have a decent home or condo and possibly a wife or husband as well if you want . If you have sufficient savings then you can open a business in that country just to pay the regular bills and not work too hard .

As others have stated your mental or personal problems will follow you but it's nice to leave your home country if the cost of living is inflated with a dysfunctional Marxist / globalist culture

To live in the globalist shithole cities like London and New York can cost hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars US just to own a home , and even then it might be in a neighborhood filled with undesirables .

You can have a nice villa in Latin America or Southeast Asia at very low cost or even move to a cheaper part of your home country

This would of really been appealing to me a few years back but do not have a passport. Can some one get into trouble trying to leave the UK across the Chanel say in a caravan. Once across you could just disappear.

Why not just get a passport ? It's going to be cheaper than paying someone to smuggle you this way .

My brother did this. Gave away everything and moved to NZ with his guitar and one small suitcase. He's a changed man, very happy in life and has achieved so much there, even ending up on the TV to receive a reward.

Quality thread. I think this is a question so many of us have asked before. I'm 31 and have spent almost my entire life in the same place, so this thought occurs to me quite a bit.

I've wanted to live in Japan before, but teaching English wouldn't be an option for someone with a (usually mild) speech impediment, and there's really no other means for an American to get by there.

I have a Guatemalan friend and she doesn't have very nice things to say about her country. If you follow the news from Mexico and C. America it's a lot of bad shit going on down there. There are some nice places, of course, like Antigua, but most of the country (especially Guatemala City) is not that safe and very poor, not a great combination.
