I spent time researching it this weekend, and learned that in the state I'm in the only background check is that which is federally required, and that voluntairy hospitalizaions do not go into that database. So I decicided to try it tonight. I did not have a mental health flag and passed the background check. In the state that I'm in, there is no waiting period or training requirments, so I was able decide where to get it, purchase, and walk out with it in hand in a few hours. I'm horrified that it was so easy, and also grateful because it is incrediably free-ing to have ready access to an option that allows me to exercise decision about whether to live or die (barring other health issues or unintended accidents.) The weird thing, is that now that I have it in my hands, I feel less suicidal. Not sure if others can relate to feeling less suicidal when a means is within hands, and not sure if others can relate to gun laws being so lax.

yeah, once you have a method in place, it makes sense to feel relief. you have your exit in your hands, and whenever you need to use it, you have an escape. it makes perfect sense to feel a little better about that. it's like a comfort.

A Taurus 605 Protector. It is a replacement of the gun I got a month ago that my therapist convinced me to give to her. That one was prettier- it had a brown barrel, but it is a replacement nonetheless, and I think I will still try to find one with a brown barrel. I am messaging my therapist tomorrow to see if she hasn't turned my gun into the police yet, that she give it to my dog's godmother. I know that may be a stretch- and when I gave the gun and ammo to hear I was thinking that I was giving it to her for safekeeping, and not permanently seperating from! But it is a pretty piece and I would prefer it not be melted down for scrap metal though I know she would never give the gun anyone that she thought might give it back to me any day (even if it's 20 years from now!)

Having the method lined up helps a lot. You don't have to worry about if you can get it, and it's always there if you need it. Grats on getting it.

That is nice. I may expand my horizons after this. Some of the vintage guns are just works of art and I'm thinking of getting. The gun lock box I got tonight with the gun and ammo has levels for two firearms, so a beautiful antique piece may need to go in there as well.

I have heard of others feeling less suicidal when they have access to a method.
Somebody else commented about feeling this way on one of my threads tonight.

I don't get it, and can't relate.
Since obtaining SN, I have just wanted to have it over with. The only reason I haven't is because I thought it would take much longer to arrive and I haven't sorted anything out.

I'm not sure yet. I feel like I've seen a lot of beutiful antique pieces on selling sites. I feel like i'd have to do more research before settling.

The feeling of needing to sort things/wrap up projects is why I haven't before. It don't want to leave hanging threads but haven't had it in my to finish projects up either.

Agree with all the above. Once you have your method in hand and planned, you feel more in control of your situation because YOU are the one who finally decides if and when you stay or go. It really is a comfort to feel that control. I only have a rope but sometimes just reminding myself of that rope calms me down a bit, at least for awhile.

Yes that is exactly how I feel.

She has never sectioned a client before so her first response would likely be to try to give it to her. I just don't want to go down that path though and if she knows I have it and don't agree to give it to her then she would be professionally obligated to section me. I'm not saying anything!

Yeah in no other country would it be this easy. The state I'm in doesn't require permits for you to have it in your home or car etc. though!

You are lucky. I never really was into guns but I can see the reason you like having one. Congratulations. I think it's reasonable to feel more relaxed to have one as long as it's handled with care.

Sherri will have to chime in on this one but for me- I went to the bathroom after I paid (they do the background check after you pay) and I came back to the registrar and my background check was cleared and I walked out with it all. All in all it took me a few hours (figuring out where to go, drive there and back, time in the store....)

I didn't realize exactly how easy it would be to get one! I'm hoping my therapist thasn't turned the one I gave to her in yet. I know she can't give it back to me, but I asked her if she could give it to someone else who would hold onto it. That piece was just pretty. It's so weird to me how having one now makes me feel less suicidal. I got a lock box for it when I got it that cost about $120 (so a fair investment of money.) I guess what it is, is that other than the gun giving me control over staying or going, I'm starting to build associations with it being something you can have and not neccesarily something that you use as soon as you get it. My sister's birthday is today, so if I don't want her birthday to be associated with death I need to hold off until at least mid-October. I had thought of that before, but I wasn't sure if I could hold off that long.

My older son who passed away had bought a pistol. He wanted to have it for protecting us if needed. It was shot once- the day he bought it. I now have it and wish someone would teach me how to load it. I know guns need cleaning and stuff to keep them in good shape. I dont even know how to do that with it

That sounds like a lot to carry. I'm sorry to hear it. I have no clue either. I'll have to find youtube videos. I hope that materials online can make you feel more empowered with it.

When I was a teen i was made to sign a paper saying I couldn't own a gun for 2years? Or something like that. I have since been in and out of impatient stays, so I'm not sure if I qualify anymore. I want to try just to see if I get approved.

I'm guessing it will depend where you are? If you're in the States I think that federally a mental health flag only comes up if you've been involuntarily admitted. Different states have different systems, but where I am the federal guidelines are greater than the state and so I passed the background check.

Wow that is lax. Where I live you nees to give up your first born to get access to a gun. I'm lucky to know the right people but mostly you just cant access guns here. Having said that I'm now in hospt having fucked up shooting myself in the head. However with the right plan in place it will work. I didnt plan to shoot myself when I did. I got into a fight with someone in the morning, I got hold of the gun I used from a diff person. I was leaving where I was when the cops turned up so shot myself in front if them rather than get taken in. So not planned and that was my mistake. I wont make the same mistake next time. Good luck to you whatever you decide.

Think it said 9mm and above. Preferably hollow points and P+. But I reckon if you're buying a new gun you might as well go for a larger caliber from the onset just to make sure. For shotgun 00 Buck, although I've also read that the kinetic energy alone is high enough to get the jo done no matter which ammo is used. I assume there's no red flags on combination of ammo or guns, but I'm not qualified to answer that.

I can't answer the question about certain type of gun and ammo because I really don't know anything about guns or ammo. I just read about where to shot yourself in the head to ensure maximum success. I figure that if I go out to the woods to a real rural location that I won't be found and that increases the chances of success.

In terms of the second question-- I think it depends what state your're in. I learned that in the state I'm in mental health doesn't come up on a background check unless you've been involuntarily committed. I learned that from googling and an NPR piece about people with mental illness getting guns in the state I'm in came up. They were of course presenting it as "this is a problem" and had no idea that a suicidal person would be able to use the information they provided to actually get a gun. There is no waiting period in the state I'm in. I decided to go out and get it and I walked out of the store with it in hand all in a matter of hours. Other states I think have waiting periods. From a public health perspective it makes sense but I was sure glad to be able to get my hands on it so quickly.

Getting the gun has ironically been my best depression treatment. I got enough of a lift from getting it to push through a few more weeks. I'm gonna wait to see what happens with the election because I'm curious, and I have a conference presentation the day after the election, so I'll hang around for that. I told my therapist about how the fact that I can get a gun so easily is my depression treatment right now. I didn't say that I got one. Anyhow, she was going to advocate an ECT referral for me, but no one will give me a referral, so the gun and ammo remain my treatment for now. I talked about going on a vacation for my birthday a little after the election. I think I can use that as an opportunity to get to a rural location and escape detection until I'm gone. I wish I could garauntee that I'd just go missing and not be found ever. If I knew that I could just be a missing person rather than a known suicide then I'd feel more at ease with acting.
