I did a 23 and me ancestory dna test and it says around half of people with DNA like mine have depression. Science is starting to prove it can be genetic . People continue to breed with mental illness not thinking it could be passed onto their child..

In general, your whole life depends on what kind of person you are born, where you are born, how you are born, who raises you, etc.
Our life is a gamble from the very beginning.

my dad certainly passed his shit onto me. i mean, it's a long line from what i gather - his father was abusive, though i never met him
genes, chemicals... it's all so unfair. i i wish i was blissfully unaware about the role they play. that things out of my control can really make me this sick
Doesn't surprise me at all. Depression evolved as a means of keeping us alive when external circumstances become unfavorable and are beyond our control. Expending effort trying to change those circumstances is counter-productive, as it will deplete your stocks of energy and make you die sooner. Depression makes you feel miserable and, basically, it forces you to curl up and do nothing. Doing nothing is the right strategy in such situations, as it minimises your use of energy, and thus increases your chance of surviving until better times arrive.
There must be some DNA influence in all that. Many people who suffer from lifelong depression are the victims of genes that are too enthusiastic in producing depression i.e. they make you depressed even in the absence of unfavorable external circumstances.
I can think of several other situations in which a "good" response gets switched on in inappropriate circumstances, making it a "bad" response. Hayfever sufferers (of which I am one) are victims of the part of your immune system that protects you from macro-parasites. In hayfever, or other allergies, it gets switched on too easily, even when there is no real threat. .Another common malfunction comes from the system that protects you when you are seriously injured; it makes your blood pressure drop a lot so you don't bleed to death. In me that system is triggered far too easily, and gets turned on if someone sticks a needle in me, for any medical procedure. When that happens, my blood pressure plummets and I faint. My father had the same problem.

Depression and other serious mental health issues certainly run in our family. Most notably in women down one side of the family tree. Oh wait, women down both sides.. We always forget one side even exists. It's awful but also gender affirming to us.

Just though I'd mention the book by Robert Sapolsky named "Determined " . Well worth a read and covers many of the subjects being mentioned here. He also has many videos on YouTube discussing / debating most of these things
Literally. I heard that there's generational trauma which is passed on through DNA. The funny thing is that I heard that you don't even reincarnate into the same family, so you got their trauma for nothing lol
I can't stand how father who has enjoyed perfect mental health his whole life wasted his good genes on my DNA swamp of a mother (not even considering her temperament)...

I learned that there is a genetical predisposition but that doesn't mean you are gonna suffer from depression just because your ancestors did. The most important aspect is the psychosocial factor. Meaning you can have a predisposition but if you have a loving and supportive environment in your childhood you might as well be mentally healthy.

I dont mean to offend you but depression has sources in the biography. It s not just a genetical condition.
The genetical part is that you re more vulnerable.
Sometimes it takes us very long to understand that our parents couldn't actually be there for us the way we would ve needed it.

it can indeed be a genetic factor only. Some people are naturally depressed since always. Some users here are example, especially that one who keep posting the same thread every day.
There is also a case of a woman who is incapable of feeling suffering and has never been unhappy in her entire life.
All of our psychological characteristics are largely determined by genetics, but some times they are the only reason someone are born the way they are.

I definitely got hit with it hard. I can remember thoughts of shooting myself in the head growing up. They were pretty dormant because I never really had too hard of obstacles. But, now that I am older and have a huge failure under me. The thoughts are nonstop.

I guess that's the issue though. How much of it is a gamble? Do parents not realise they don't have the finances to raise a child? Do they not look around at their environment and think- maybe not the best place for a defenceless infant? If they know they have a hereditary prone illness- do they just hope it won't get passed on?
I wonder how many parents really think about these things. I think mostly- if they do even consider them, they think they will overcome it all with love or something.

It's genetic or one of the side risk is genetic! I know my uncle had depression and they found him hanged in the garage but I was a baby and none ever said anything stranger told me..
One of many, Many, MANY reasons not to create children.
My parents gave me so many faulty genes. From mental illness (though I don't think I have clinical depression) and a tendency towards addiction and substance abuse to being a cancer time bomb. I have at least one major genetic disorder and probably a second that will rob me of my strength over time.
They didn't know about these things before having me and that's my point. Most people don't know what they are passing on.
The cycle dies with this generation. My sister is not having kids either.

I can say anecdotally that there is definitely evidence of depression in my family, but there's also a history of dysfunction and incompetence in the culture. Speculatively, I think I would have turned out reasonably well if I had had a passably healthy childhood environment.

This is why I refuse to have kids, they're not going to stand a chance with our families genetics. There's been studies that show there's a strong correlation between mental illnesses being genetically inherited. Couple that with a shitty environment and you have the recipe for one fucked up child. And people have the audacity to say that birth is beautiful. It's a curse to begin with.
