I watched the Superbowl, actually I worked through it and then was angrily yelled at after over volunteer work done wrong. There is a need for society to have billions of consumers or there won't be enough money to continue supporting all the consumers. It's not even a conspiracy with a rich and poor, it's simply an enormous hive working desperately to suck up just enough resources to grow.
The best I could imagine society is a tumor: the Enhanced permeation and retention of a solid tumor filters fluid from the host like a sponge with funnels. The nutrients pull blood and serum in through the funnel wide openings then hold it inside in a leaky mess of pores that are harder to leak back out of than remain inside the mass. That way the fast growing tumor mass keeps the cells bathed in a nutrient rich sludge.
Compare that to our world today: mass commerce and development has no real purpose other than keeping growing. Sure it helps a few people get rich and sure it helps.mamy others get jobs. In a 1000 years there will be new rich people and more jobs and the tumor will simply have grown at a rate. I understand on the bright side people have homes and families and loved ones or at least a chance at that but in reality they exist for the contumor to keep finding cheap ways to grab resources and grow.
An entire industry has grown up to rationalize happiness in the face of hating what you do or have become. Finding joy in little things or having a state of mind of positivity in the face of drudgery at work or in life is the vanguard of the contumor defenses trying to keep the cells from committing apoptosis (spontaneous cell death). The benefit of you as an individual to the contumor is that you continue to provide and consume. You're not good or bad and the tumor doesn't know whether it has a purpose or not but it will continue to grow no matter what.
How many have searched for "how to do xyz" as a curiosity or question only to be bombarded by hours of ads for goods or services related to "xyz". And when you think and say "I never intended to buy goods or services related to xyz" what you learn is that the consumer tumor has to exist therefore you have to consume these messages and the hope whether real or not is that you will spend your resources on those goods or services. You as an individual don't matter. Those people who write articles on "how to do xyz" must exist and consume resources and so must you.
We have not been sold a conspiracy or cabal of wealthy elite controlling the world: lord knows that brilliant rich people running everything would do a better job than the current mess. We have been sold an overgrowing mass that insists we need more things and should work harder to have more things because things are all that build our world. Whatever you do, whomever you become, wherever you go will be defined by this. If you wish to rationalize it and be happy then so be it. If you are seized by depression it is understandable. Your only hope is that more stuff makes you happy.
