One of the main reasons why I'm afraid of death is that I think death may be the end. In other words, I think I may lose my consciousness permanently and irreversibly when I die.

I know that there's no danger in ceasing to exist, but I still have that fear. Perhaps that fear is derived from brain's inability to imagine the nothingness. All what the brain knows is the realm of existence with its harms and benefits. So, the brain sees nothingness as this dark unknown territory.

Do you have that fear too? And how do you deal with it?

I'm not saying that I agree with him, but Socrates had an interesting take on this issue:

To fear death is nothing other than to think oneself wise when one is not; for it is to think one knows what one does not know. No man knows whether death may not even turn out to be the greatest blessing for a human being; and yet people fear it as if they knew for certain that is is the greatest of evil.

Uuugghh..... makes me shudder just thinking about this.. a black void of nothingness , ceasing to exist. Yeah that's a big fear I have, along with numerous other people too I imagine. I deal with it all by using alcohol and various other substances.

Not sure I fear it asuch. I think the possibility of an afterlife is actually more frightening. (Of any description- not sure an eternity anywhere would be good.)

It's definitely an odd thought but there again- it isn't entirely alien. Surely, we practise death every night when we go to sleep? I just think it will be like that but without the waking up bit. 😆

How can you know that there's no danger in ceasing to exist?

I am sure that I will cease to exist and that makes me really happy. Imagine there is something different than nothingness, it could be hell or infinite boredom.

I am actually most terrified of an afterlife as we don't know what the rules will be there and if it can really go on forever that's torture. I believe in the Buddhist Nirvana. Ultimate peace when you die no thoughts, no sense of self.

We all will die anyway regardless if by our own hands or in old age, we still have to face death.

All we can do is delay the inevitable.
So you can face the big bad boss at Stage 25 or enjoy the game a bit longer and face the big bad boss at Stage 80.

Makes no difference, we all will have to experience it.

I view it as being the most beautiful thing ever, to finally cease to exist and to lack the ability to be aware of this horrific world forever. It's completely irrational to fear non existence, in fact the thought of no longer being apart of this world is the only thing that could ever be close to a relief to me. There is nothing to fear as we won't even be aware of the fact that we are dead, and the reality is that there are no disadvantages to being dead as to die solves all of life's problems after all.

Only those who continue exist in this hellish world are the ones who can suffer and the non existent lack the ability to be tormented. This is why to not exist is completely ideal and anyway our only true purpose as humans is to die, all that life is, is just an unnecessary and meaningless consequence of evolution. The fate of all existing beings is to suffer, deteriorate and eventually die and this is undeniable. So therefore non existence should never be feared, as after all it's true freedom and it's something so ideal to never have to experience another second here. Simply just being aware of the fact that I exist makes the thought of non existence sound so incredibly appealing.

Do you have that fear too? And how do you deal with it?

I have thought about it a lot. I used to be afraid of nothingness or whatever comes after. Then I realized it makes no sense to think about, because it's literally impossible to know. So, I kinda accepted it. We just need to take the gamble, and whatever comes, let it come. If it's nothingness (I believe it is), that's nothing to afraid of. If it's something else, I would still take the chance. So, there is no reason for not doing it.

But I'm still hesitant… Why?

I'm just afraid to let go. Fear of missing out. Life is… "interesting"? I guess? Or the fact that there is still that 0.00...0001 chance that I will get something pleasant out of it? The chance is low, but it's not 0. If I ctb, it'll be 0. So, why hurry? That's my dilemma!

Forever Sleep. - Good point, I agree with you on this and have thought about it quite a bit but.... I often have dreams ( some relevant, others that are odd/ scary and make no sense...) so it's just extremely hard for me to Really believe that it's like death. Unless of course there is an afterlife ... * Heaven, Hell, or.. w/e*

Just my .02. , Idk...? Certainly not trying to create a debate or argument by Any means. ♥

AreWeWinning. - Couldn't have said it better myself, Very true. It's part of my dilemma as well! Well put.
