• Hey Guest,

We wanted to share a quick update with the community.

Our public expense ledger is now live, allowing anyone to see how donations are used to support the ongoing operation of the site.

    👉 View the ledger here

Over the past year, increased regulatory pressure in multiple regions like UK OFCOM and Australia's eSafety has led to higher operational costs, including infrastructure, security, and the need to work with more specialized service providers to keep the site online and stable.

If you value the community and would like to help support its continued operation, donations are greatly appreciated. If you wish to donate via Bank Transfer or other options, please open a ticket.

    Donate via cryptocurrency:

If you look on the Samaritans website it confirms what we are saying. They respect your decision and are confidential. Don't worry.

I had me checked before and it does say unless you're in immediate damaged and unable to make descisions. But it also says somewhere else also unless your a adult at risk —- which is ambiguous

They list elsewhere on that part of their website what they class as an adult at risk. https://www.samaritans.org/about-samaritans/our-organisation/our-safeguarding-policy/

I sometimes found they have made me feel a bit less alone, I think it depends on how you connect with the volunteer but I have spoken to some lovely people

Actually they are okay with those fo us who have mental health challenges - they are the only organisation (and possibly CALM) where it is highly unlikely that safeguarding will be triggered.

Good if you're looking for a 20 year old.with no relevant life experience to harp on how brave and strong you are and tell you to take a bubble bath.

I've used the text line several times. They take forever to link you with someone and then their responses are slow and usually just scripted.

Usually it would go like this:
"I'm having a crisis about XYZ"
"I'm sorry to hear that. That sounds so hard. Tell me more"
"blah blah blah"
"That sounds very difficult. May I ask, do you have any thoughts of hurting yourself"
"Yes but I don't plan on acting on it" (always a lie but I don't want to get the cops sent on me)
"I'm glad to hear you don't plan on acting on it. What are some coping skills you like?"
They then tell you to try some menial coping skill that never once has helped me in a suicidal crisis. My favorites were eat a brownie, paint, and go on a walk at midnight as a young female. Then they hang up.

I've only had one experience with a crisis like be helpful and it was because I was having a panic attack, I wasn't even suicidal.
These are both exceptionally accurate.
Most of them just follow a script and won't really engage in deep conversations since the employees are usually just high school grads or people in between jobs who don't really care or have the skills to actually help.
FWIW in the US it's usually volunteers I believe, which means they care but don't really have the skills.
