  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I've gotten this before, it's annoying. I'm sick of constantly looking out for everyone else's feelings and needs and not looking inward for what I want and desire

I just posted about how I had been raised to put everyone else's needs before my own and how hard that behavior is to change. Even as a somewhat rational adult I still feel a tremendous amount of guilt when I do something for myself. But it I AM getting better.

And anyone who believes suicide is a selfish or greedy act is a very fortunate person. That attitude tells me they have never truly suffered in their life. Take my husband for example -- he believes that anyone who commits the act is selfish, greedy, cowardly, blah blah blah. He also bitches CONSTANTLY about how miserable his life is (thanks baby for making sure I know what you think about my wife skills. 🙄🙄)

And I can tell you I would have KILLED to have led the life he has had. Oldest boy in a upper middle class family who was spoilt rotten although to hear him tell it he was lucky to have survived the "ambivalence" his parents showed him.
The LUCK he has had has been insane -- the best example I could give you of that would "out" me in a nano-second but the bottom line is he got into a professional organization he had ALWAYS wanted into not because he went through the application process but because the legislature "rolled" his position into the other job title to reduce expenses. And while he did work, trust me, it was not hard in the physical sense of the word, yet to hear him tell it he dug ditches all day with a butter knife. That transfer changed his entire life -- and mine. Almost tripled his ending income, which of course, did the same for his retirement pension.

Don't get me wrong. He put in the time. And the men and women who went through the application process and education requirements looked down on him and his co-workers for getting rolled into the agency because they didn't do "the hard work to get in the right way". So, in that sense, he did earn what he got. But he was never truly grateful from what I saw. More like he always felt like he was owed for some reason.

I asked him recently asked him if he EVER did any introspection and thought about how his actions affected himself. And how many he could change to kinda be happier. He looked at me with a confounded look and said "No. Why would I do that?" I don't even try anymore. That man truly believes that if everyone would just cater to him and his wants, everything would be fine. 🙄

And them he wonders why I can hardly stand to have a conversation with him, even really superficial ones about the weather. I don't even remember the last time I looked him in the eye. And his touch actually makes me recoil now. (See? Told you my parents trained me well -- I have learned (through introspection 🤨) that I was attracted to him because I was looking to heal childhood wounds. Glad I have figured out I can do that without his input. 🤷🏻

Greedy? No, there is nothing greedy about suicide. People love to play the "suicide is selfish!" Card because it helps alleviate their own guilt instead of having the guts to face their own shortcomings. They don't want to admit that they want to keep you around for their own gain, and that you leaving the equation means they have to look for another person to feed their egos. Saying it like that makes them seem like they're the bad people, which is something very few, if not none, of them have the capacity to reflect on in any meaningful way.

greedy
  1. Having or showing a strong or excessive desire to acquire money or possess things, especially wishing to possess more than what one needs or deserves
Sounds like suicide to me! lol

I'm sorry, but I hate arguments like these. They are genuinely so lazy and dumb. I've heard people who have suffered like hell refer to suicide as selfish. It has nothing to do with suffering and is more of a reflection of things, like the culture and/or people you grew up with.

My soul mate has been amazing with this, never once calling me selfish.
Even when I talk about how selfish I feel she just loves and accepts me and tells me she understands.

She has done this consistently while also acknowledging that their desire to save me is selfish and has never asked or begged me to stay.

I dunno why they say that. (And I am one of that group.) Personally I think it has a lot more to do with always thinking about alternative ways to accomplish whatever it is you want to do, exercising a little introspection, and being a fucking stubborn bitch than "working harder". And there are plenty of things in this world that working harder will never get you, ya know?

But then what do I know?? I'm some old lady who has one foot in the grave, the other on a banana peel and is trying to figure out how to get the cat to jump up on me and go ahead, push me in said grave and get me covered up in dirt before I can figure out how to get up without a chair to pull myself up on. 😉 Lol

I think suicide is selfish. How is it not? In my opinion it's also important to consider the implications suicide has on others, though I am not a fan of guilt tripping and the effects it has on people who are already in a fragile mental state. I suppose the "think of your loved ones" sentiment is a bit of a water-is-wet statement, but some people are very impulsive and clouded in emotions.

I have never come across a suicidal person who wasn't thinking about the effects it would have on someone else.

It is well known that suicide is often seen as a solution to being a burden on others - not selfish at all.

Suicide would only selfish if you didn't care about the effects on others.
