This is the only newspaper with specific info about what illnesses are included for euthanasia / assisted suicide as of yet and this is what it says:

Euthanasia and assisted suicide will not only be available in the National Health System for the "terminally ill or incurable." Disability or a psychiatric illness will also be a reason to be able to request assistance to die, since the law recognizes this right for those who suffer from "a chronic and disabling condition" or "a serious and incurable disease causing suffering. physical or mental intolerable.

From ABC, here is the link: https://www.abc.es/sociedad/abci-sera-prestacion-ayuda-morir-202012171633_noticia.html

Thoughts?

If I’m understanding correctly this seems to be a good step forward.

Actually not only that. It means businesses like Dignitas and Pegasus will pop up there and rival them causing the prices to go down slightly and standards to be raised. It seems like a win for everyone.

Spain gets more tax revenue
People can die peacefully.

it could also be huge for the death with dignity movement depending on the restrictions placed upon it. Like will foreigners be able to come and get euthanasia/assistance etc.

Excellent!
Little by little assisted suicide/chosen euthanasia are being allowed in more countries.

I hope they become more flexible as for the candidates' conditions. It'd be great if "just dying because the world sucks" were more than enough to have an assisted CTB.

Hopefully it’s also better then Dignitas as they’re super expensive and keep the money even if they don’t find you “fit” the requirements.

This will be really interesting. I’m guessing within 1-2 years if passed we will see death with dignity and euthanasia areas open up in Spain.

I can't tell if it's happened or not yet, but if it does actually ends up happening, I think this will be a great step forward for humanity. The choice to die should be a human right, so it's always nice to see other countries embracing that. But I wonder how it will actually be implemented, and how complicated will it be to access. Things like pricing and wait times are very important, and I just hope it doesn't become a huge money-making scheme that preys on the vulnerable. But I'm mostly really pleased about this, I'm glad to see how progressive our species is becoming. Thanks for sharing!

I second this! There really shouldn't be any gatekeeping on wanting to die, death is something we will all experience eventually, so what's the point in preventing people from going a little early?

Under the proposed legislation, public and private health professionals will be able to assist patients who no longer wish to suffer "a serious and incurable disease" or a "debilitating and chronic condition" that is "unbearable".

They would also need to be an adult Spanish citizen or resident who can make rational decisions, and who have asked to die on four different occasions during the process, which can be longer than a month.

The only obstacle now is congress which is predicted to pass the bill in a landslide.

This is truly a good step in the right direction. Now only if the United States of America did this.

New article from ABC: https://www.abc.es/sociedad/abci-me...an-acceso-eutanasia-202012182034_noticia.html

The full article has a paywall but the title says: "Doctors warn that psychiatric patients will also have access to euthanasia."

It continues:

If the organic law proposal for the regulation of euthanasia leaves the Senate as it was approved this Thursday in the plenary session of the Congress, psychiatric illness will also be a reason to access euthanasia. This is how the vice president of the Spanish Society of Psychiatry, Dr. Manuel Martín Carrasco, explains to ABC, pointing out that the current text of the rule is "so ambiguous" that it "lends itself to that interpretation."

- what about all the Catholics? (I include myself in this group inspite of my homosexual / gothic / magick tendencies!!!
when we went to see Marilyn Manson in Barcelona they caused riots: surely they will object to this? i mean a Manson cd is like 2 hours long; but suicide is everlasting soul damnation! (it isn't actually - read Journey of Souls / Destiny of Souls) memento mori, muthaf$%&rs

Could we have an update on this from anyone in Spain? Is mental illness allowed?
