Ether is a knock-out liquid. Douse a rag with ether and hold it over someone's mouth and nose and they will be knocked out fairly quickly - go down for a nap.
How easy is this stuff to buy? I'd love something that could cause a 'passive' hanging, i.e. stand on something with noose attached > ether causes unconsciousness and inevitable fall > you die a peaceful death.
I'm not really sure. There are various types of ethers, but 'diethyl ether' is what was used as an anesthetic back in the 1800s. However it is also highly flammable and I'm pretty sure it takes a while -- at least 5 minutes or more -- of breathing it before you go unconcious. While one might be able to purchase it in the US, it is also on the DEA's lists of watched chemicals since it apparently can be used to manufacture controlled substances. Thus I'm not sure what sort of reporting is done regarding the purchase of it.
