Worked for a company in transcription for 5 years very, very successfully. They moved offices so I could not work there anymore (although I wish I agreed to it now). Was told I would get freelance work full-time. This was August, and what work I get is so slow to do (nothing like the work I did when I was working in their office in London) I only earn about £4 an hour. All jobs online seem to be a scam or you're competing with people in third world countries quoting a pittance who claim to be brilliant English speakers but can't even do two paragraphs of their intro without making a mistake (I am not being racist here because I am sure many are excellent but transcription is difficult with the range of accents you come across). I sit here in the cold, even in May this room is so cold, in the room I work in and sleep in 23 hours of a day. I thought I had got a job. It turned out to be a scam. I was told I would get 30 hours a week. I would be lucky to get 10 hours a month out of it and then it would involve more travelling than it is worth, i.e. get picked up at 5.00 am for a 9.00 am start in London at minimum wage and then back again. I wasted two weeks of my life on this and it should only have been about one week but their incompetence led to me being delayed by a week, a week when I spent more than I should have done and turned down interviews for proper jobs I really want. I went for an interview today but to get the job I have to attend the office unpaid for several weeks to see how me and the boss "get on", i.e. probably wants to have sex with me. I cannot afford to do this and I think it's a con. I applied several months ago and he (well, he says) was too busy because he doesn't have a full-time secretary to have replied to me. He has probably been getting potential secretaries to "try out" on their backs probably for weeks. I just cannot trust anyone anymore. I am 47, got two good A Level results (university was not a thing for people of my age back then, unless middle class), a Mensa level IQ, numerate and literate, 15 years as a legal secretary, good references, security checked, good employment history. If I lie in an application I am liable for prosecution but employers can do anything they want to, even to the degree the Jobcentre will refer people onto employers who they know do not actually pay their workers. This is what makes me suicidal. All I am asking for is a job a minimum wage, even a part time one. I don't actually need a whole lot of money to live on, literally about £600 per month, but I cannot find a job anywhere. Am too old, too experienced, too educated etc, etc.

Socialism/communism sucks huh! That's basically why many pple attempt self employment to survive if u can do it. It's not that u are too old or anything u mentioned about yourself. It's because the government restricts the free market which limits quality jobs, pay, and upward mobility. All the wealth is funneled up to the ruling class and the rest of the people are one paycheck away from destitution. It's going to be a disaster when the USD collapses and hyperinflation hits. This is an absolute certainty within just a few years at most. If you are female it's especially hard because many women's jobs unless artificially created by government don't pay that well. Many jobs women tend to do are not as high paying. Men's jobs often pay more because they tend to be able to put in more hours, more dangerous jobs, often harder work physically.
