For the record, I have been to hospitals before for mental health.

Is it just me or is the check in process for mental health at emerge seem embarrassing as hell?

Like the check in person asks you all these questions in front of the whole fucking line up. Even if you hand them a note saying you go want to go in for mental heath, they still ask you dumb questions like: Do you have suicide thoughts? Are you depressed?
Bro....How about I tell you all these answers in private or just let the psychiatrist ask me these questions?
Do you need to yell it out loud so that everyone in the line up hears it? Then in the waiting room you are looking at these same people over and over again and thinking about what they think of you every time they glance over.

Like wtf?....
If you had an issue with your private parts, I think anybody with common sense would agree that you would want to keep those things private.
So why is mental health any different?
In fact, mental health should be treated even more carefully. Can you imagine someone with social anxiety disorder being embarrassed like that in front of everyone?

Honestly they say you should go to the hospital if you have mental health issues. But sometimes the whole process of checking in is so intimidating that its not even worth going.

There is. But you have to pay thousands of dollars to a therapist. Not everyone has that luxury.

unfortunately thats true in many cases :/ are you in the usa? if so yeah its definitely a luxury here. like i said before i wish there was an easier way :/ i dont think mental health services should be treated as a luxury instead of a necessity

Is it better? Do you get to chat in private?
yup. It's better (but maybe it depends on person who's checking in, idk). I've been in this situation before -my social anxiety was soooo soooooooo much worse - I just asked if we can go somewhere more private.

Like, I don't think it was a "standard procedure", but I got to a backroom.

Plus - just a little remainder. I know it's hard if you don't get a chance like me, but most of people in a line for registration don't give a single thought. And even if, it's something they're gonna forget in a minute. So don't get your mind trapped in it. Just go get help if you need it.

Reminds me of a time I really was in the er with a mortifying issue downstairs and apparently someone I knew was in line behind me and heard everything 😭 they didn't say anything at the time but messaged me about it later

From experience, psych hospitals are either surprisingly helpful, or downright hell. There's no in between. But that initial walk through in an ER is definitely brutal. Here I stand, weak, vulnerable, and hopeless seeking help. And it's met with people who seem like they could not care less. And a room full of eyes as they notice you're not gasping in pain holding your stomach or some shit. I had to go with the cops one time. They escorted me there and told the nurse I was suicidal. Just opened their big damn mouths and shared the worst parts of me. Nurses and officers exchanged pleasentries as I was transferred to a cold, observation room with a hospital gown. I was locked in there alone and it made me feel more hopeless. Ugh. All that to say yes lol. For something they advertise so freely, admitting yourself into a hospital is a terrible process and therefore a huge deterrant.

Same thing happened to me too. TWICE. That's why I got so fucking pissed. Honestly, if it was some strangers I wouldn't care as much. But the fact that I ran into some friends / co-workers before, made me think twice before going again. What if I go next time and its my boss? What then? If you're in a small town. you're bound to run into someone you know.

That exactly how I feel. I am sure the strangers actually couldn't care less. But its still intimidating.

For me, I also don't trust them as much. They always advertise psych wards to be a save haven. So I once was recommended to voluntarily admit myself to a psych ward, and was told I could leave anytime.

That turned out to be not true. The put me in a waiting room to be admitted into the psych ward. It was so cold. I considered leaving so I asked. They kept trying to convince me not to leave. And that's when they said that they had to call the psychiatrist (who was off work at this point) to let me out. I was shocked because that psychiatrist was the one who told me I could leave anytime if I chose since I came in voluntarily.
If they had to call the psychiatrist in order for me to be discharged, then it was a lie. I obviously couldn't leave anytime that I wanted.
There may have been "more of a chance" that I could leave. But if they had to call to get permission for me to leave, then it's not my choice.

Luckily the psychiatrist let me leave.

But now I think twice before signing anything and will definitely never voluntarily go into a psych ward ever.
