Kay Gilderdale was almost prosecuted for helping her sick daughter find a peaceful exit. For years she battled the courts, all because the British public did not respect the woman's acceptance of her daughter's wish for suicide.
The girl suffered from the same disease I have, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, albeit a very severe form that had left her completely bedbound for many years. As her youth continued to slip away, she was adamant that she no longer wished to exist in such paltry conditions, confined to the four walls of her room 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While her parents did not want her to go, they solemnly acknowledged that their daughter had no quality of life. CFS is incurable, as the etiology of the illness remains unknown and the medical profession is woefully inadequate in managing the condition or showing any empathy towards those who suffer from it. They knew that there was no hope.
Even when people besmirched the reputation of Kay Gilderdale for assisting/enabling her daughter's suicide, the courts ruled that she was not guilty of any crime. Rather, she had demonstrated compassion, humility, and empathy by upholding her child's wishes.
