I personally don't believe in an afterlife or reincarnation, but I wish I did. It would make suicide a lot easier for me. I'm scared of dying. I wish I could be somewhere else instead like Heaven because I hate life here. Maybe I could deal with living in Heaven, in a peaceful world with nothing to worry about. But I know that nothing comes after death.

Had a disturbing thought about this recently. What if you die and are instantaneously reborn back into the same life and time you just escaped from. Everytime you die, you simply reset back to the beginning. Forever. Worst part? Your memory is completely wiped so you are forced to live the same life over and over and over.... forever....

I hope you respawn before the point that made you want to ctb or you get a 2nd chance at life. Either that or nothing comes after and life was just a terrible simulation that comes to an eventual end. I hope there is some cosmic justice to mitigate the undeserved misfortunes arising from the cosmos that we couldn't control.

That....hit me hard in the feelings. That's something because I don't feel that way much anymore. That aside, I am truly and infinitely sorry for your loss.

That depends on where consciousness actually comes from. If it's a physical thing in our brains then I'd say there's a chance that you'll eventually become conscious in some way. Sounds pretty horrible though.

What actually happens to us is the great question. None of us know and know one has come back to describe where they go. If they go anywhere at all. We live, we die hoping to enter as greater plain of existence. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't. I tend to think once we die that is it. No more more pain or suffering and not existential being existing in some ethereal plain of life. When your dead your dead entering total nothingness. Some wish to think; that there is another plain of existence. I don't believe so but it does provide something to look forward to when you die. When I die, I will feel no more pain or suffering. All the material goods will not have any meaning or recall since I just won't be anymore. I am positive some of my comments will cause some people to rethink the after life that they believe is waiting for the.m.

Why am I only this brain then and not yours as well? Why am I here and not in another body? Why do we even need consciousness?

Because your parents made you. And my parents made me. Genetics. We all only have one brain...

Why do we even need consciousness?
We don't need anything. It just came about as a result of evolution.

interesting. so you'd think that in a hypothetical scenario where we knew where in the brain consciousness lied, we'd be able to move this consciousness into another human and make that human have 2 separate consciousness ?

I doubt the existence of an afterlife or reincarnation. Seems a bit too fanciful. The universe just looks like little pockets of chaos surrounded by mostly nothing to me. Then again 95% of the mass in the universe is invisible so there's so much we don't understand. I still doubt it though.

There's no reason to think there's an afterlife and it doesn't fit together well with anything else we know about the world. It's hard to even conceptualize it in a coherent way. What is it that's getting reborn exactly? There's no evidence of a soul or stable self that's anything more than a construct of memories. There's no one thing that's you, except this process of a lump of matter evolving into a different kind of lump of matter over time and the mental states that accompany that process.

Had a disturbing thought about this recently. What if you die and are instantaneously reborn back into the same life and time you just escaped from. If no memory is carried over then there's no real connection between the old you and the new you. You're basically two different persons. The amount of subjective misery won't be added up. To every new instantiation of you, everything will be experienced for the first time. They're separate people. So, in my opinion, this is no more horrific than just the existence of other people in this life. Which is pretty horrific too tbf. :))

Either is a possibility of course. Although I don't want reincarnation due to the world getting crappier by the day, I'd take that over "going to hell" for committing suicide which is what many people think happens to those that take their own lives.

Afterlife and reincarnation are fictional concepts. I think there is nothing after this, just like before we were born, where time passed and we were not aware of anything. Once we lose consciousness, that is it for us. Death is freedom from all suffering, it is true peace.

I believe in souls and reincarnation, and that I'll finally have the right body in my next life. It's what I look forward to more than anything, and the fact that a better life is so close and yet so far away is incredibly painful.

Just thinking about this makes me feel sick. It feels like a nightmare. I always felt very uncomfortable watching the film 'Groundhog day'.
