  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I have heard that in the future it will be possible to prolong lifespan. Some advances in medical technology will make this more feasible as time goes on. Eventually people may live hundreds of years due to (probably expensive) medical treatments to prolong life.

I wonder do we have the right to do so? Is it morally okay for those who can afford such treatments to live outrageously long lives while people who just want life to end have to suffer because euthanasia isn't legal? Why is it socially acceptable to prolong our lives (and our drain on earth) while those who want to opt out have to suffer?

I don't see why choosing to die is any less morally acceptable than choosing to live longer. Our society seems hyper-focused on living as long as possible and I kind of get it in a way but it's like they are blind to other perspectives. Just because they want to live longer, doesn't mean they should push it on the rest of society. Who are they to decide what's in the public's best interests?

I'm not saying everyone should be able to die whenever they want but I honestly think there should be a fair and proper process an adult of sound mind can take to do so after other avenues have been explored. A lot of countries have delved into this, it's not that hard of an idea to grasp yet many can't seem to contemplate it.

The ethics of euthanasia is probably an unrelated topic to that of some people striving for immortality. The latter has been a goal of science since its beginnings. People can already choose to live longer lives via healthy lifestyle choices, and those with money can enjoy higher quality medical treatment. Good for them. The flaw with this system is that people who lack resources and fall through the cracks are not offered the choice of a humane exit. This is more a product of religious influence in politics than anything to do with science.

I think that people who are actively contributing to the furtherance of science and humanity probably deserve it. I can't speak for everyone else, but minds like that transcend the value of a normal human I think. They aren't just a person, they are a valuable asset to humanity. Especially the ones making strides to cure terrible diseases and things of that nature.

If you're in the 1st world, & vaccinated - you already do cheat death.

...in the 3rd world, babies r dying from influenza because basic antibiotics aren't available.
(neither are human rights :: the average Euro-American pet eats better /healthier [sic] more than the average African child)

Longevity is actually falling now and the reasons why are not clearly known. The coronavirus will no doubt reduce it further. Wealthy people may have access to better medical care anyhow but hmankind is too stupid to see the cause and effect of his actions. He is already polluting the world of existence.

I do not understand why anybody would want to live for hundreds of years. There is nothing good about prolonging the lifespan. However If euthanasia was legal everywhere, for everyone it would shatter the delusion that people hold that life is always worth living.

I think we all deserve an peaceful exit at a time of our own choosing. We have no obligations to stay alive as we did not ask to exist. We do not need to justify our reasons for leaving this world. It is our life, our decision and nobody else has any say in it.

I don't think it helps to try to ascend them to a godlike status. Everyone is just a person.

I don't think we will reach the point of people living thousands of years. Humanity will be destroyed long before that.
