Yes, I read about 15 books a year, mostly non-fiction about history, sociology, philosophy, etc. usually with a couple fiction books thrown in there too.

Currently though I'm finishing up the Bible, on the gospel of Luke now. I started reading it last year out of curiosity even though I'm not a Christian. It has been an eye-opening read, not because it was good or particularly wise or anything, but because it has made me more culturally literate.

You read the prophetic books? I've read almost everything but that. They're so boring and tedious.

I can't lie, I did skip some of those lol, as you said it just got too tedious and repetitive. I watched these secular analysis videos of them instead.

oooo~ me too! :D It's because manga generally have much more light-hearted plots, comedy, and stuff than actual books! :/ Real books are all so dramatic and dark, and I don't like that at all! >_< Plus, I know how to search for manga fit for me than books too~ Altho, I really would like to get into books too! ^_^

To deprogram from christianity and I've done it. The old testament prophecies Jesus supposedly fulfilled in Matthew are bullshit. When read in their old testament context, they're not prophecies about Jesus.

Deconstruction processes can be tough, good on you for going straight to the source material.

Yeah, it's very obvious when you read the Gospels that they were written with an agenda.

For years I read what others had to say like Richard Dawkins, etc. But then I thought to inquire as to why Jews don't accept Jesus. That's where I learned that Judaism is a lot different than I was taught. Theres no devil or hell in Judaism for example. Rabbi tovia singer on YouTube points out the discrepancies between the two faiths. And just looking at the source on one's own is good too.

It has been very interesting for me to contrast the mythical figure of Jesus and the actual Jesus portrayed in the Bible. When you read the latter in context, Jesus becomes just a disobedient and self-righteous Jew lol, no wonder the Pharisees didn't like him. Like in Luke 37 he's invited to dinner by a Pharisee and then he proceeds to flout their custom and insult them all, it's wild.

Yeah it's also been interesting to see how a lot of Christian concepts, like heaven/hell or the virgin birth, have no basis in the OT.

Jesus is an asshole. Cursing a fig tree that wasn't in season, being racist to the Syrian woman by calling her a dog. He's also arrogant as hell and talks down to everyone.

John 15:14 " you are my friends if you do what I command." Haha

Heaven isn't in the sky. That's the divine court. It's on the new earth, which doesn't have mountains or an ocean lol. And hell isn't eternal. "for the wages of sin is death but the gift of god is eternal life" and Jesus talks about the chaff being gathered and burnt up.

Yeah, the ignorance around Christianity is immense.

Matthew 12:48-50
"Your mother and brothers are at the door. Jesus responds, "who are my mother and brothers but those who do the will of God?" Weird

The worst has got to be Luke 12:51-53: "Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

Of course, the peace-love-forgiveness Jesus does exist in the Bible as well, but his character is so contradictory (especially between gospels) that you can pretty much make of him what you want.

I used to love reading until around middle school when my dad forced me to read so many books for no reason that I ended up hating reading. I still like going to bookstores and occasionally when something interests me I still try to read it.

I recently reread Trumpet of the Swan for the first time since third grade. It was such a great book in my childhood that gave me so much hope. Surely if this mute trumpeter swan could find love then one day I could, right? I mean never mind the fact that his crush happens to blow into the place he's staying in halfway across the country via hurricane and she's single. I also couldn't stop giggling at the way this book kept using terms like 'queer' and 'gay' in the old fashioned way.

Yeah he's not a hippie lol. He's moody. The book of John is written differently than the other gospels. It's more theological and Jesus is very repetitive with the whole "I come from the father. The father is in me and I in the father. I do what the father asks of me. If you loved him, you'd believe in me for I came down from heaven" etc

I took it upon myself to read fiction books about group suicide. I wrote reviews about them, from a pro-choice perspective, in another forum I was on. I am very new to SS. If I would like to post those reviews here, what would be an appropriate forum?

The books I have read so far are:
  1. "The Pact" by Jodie Picoult
  2. Suicide Pact by John Monarch .
  3. All The Things We Never Said by Yasmin Rahman
  4. The Zero and the One by Ryan Ruby.
The second one was the most pro-choice.

I used to read when I was a kid but I lost the habit of doing so. I would read for an hour every morning when I first woke up. I would also read after school. My favorite genre was fantasy and I would immerse myself into fantasy worlds. However, as I got older, my attention span decreased to the point where I can't concentrate at all. I don't have the focus or concentration to get through a book unless it's interesting enough. I think I also stopped reading in an effort to seem less intelligent because I believed that reading was for nerds. I was shamed and bullied for being smart during middle school. The other kids would take my progress report/report card and look at my 100s. I made a conscious effort to appear less brainy because I didn't want to seem like a nerd. Now, I want to seem smart again but I think I'm a fake intellectual lol

I LOVE reading, right now Im reading "The Picture of Dorian Gray", I finished "The Great Gatsby" a couple of days ago (loved it), and the last book I read that I cant stop thinking about is "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt, amazing book.
Never read any Kafka but its definetly in my list, Im very interested in "The trial" aside from the obvious one ("Metamorphosis").

A classics fan 🤩
Read Kafka's short stories Before the Law and The Imperial Message. Unfortunately, a lot of his stories are eh. I gave up on the metamorphosis and the trial. Tedious and frustrating.
