i came from a pretty conservative family and we were taught about worshiping god, heaven, hell, you know, that stuff on higher power and everything. i also studied theology as one of my major in uni bcs its the only option im left with. so naturally i have to believe those things or else when will i make practical of my studies?

so the thing is, suicide is often associated with sin and i am afraid of hell, which will be my place if i committed to the said sin. but it got me wondering, if god is all compassionate and loving, he would know i am suffering inside and why would he want me to put up with it. laawrd im not his strongest soldier.

i feel like if i ever ctb one day, i would dedicate one very earnest prayer for god to not put me in hell. i would rationalize my way of ctb to him so he would understand. what about you guys? do you believe in hell? will you guys pray for one last time like i would?

I don't believe in hell, or heaven, for that matter. if hell is just a descriptor used to define a place of unrelenting torture, then, I guess, one could use that term to describe this place we are all living in right now. I believe the bible is pure mythology made up by man to keep man in line. I haven't read much of the bible, really because I'm just not interested in it or what it purports to be some truth, which I do not believe. I, basically, know the story of the bible. I know jesus was crucified on the cross. When I think about that story I can't help think how much like suicide-by-cop that entire scenario is. Instead of waving a gun and running toward a bunch of cops in order to get shot to death, jesus, basically, used his words to rile up the people, knowing full well it would result in his death. Seems like the same thing to me in a different time period. Also, if god is so knowing and powerful, surely he would have known what was going to happen to his son and a) ignored the situation and either did nothing to help him or warn him or b) just didn't give a crap what happened to him. Either scenario, in current man's law, would result in the parent being tried, convicted, and punished with prison time. Furthermore, doesn't the bible teach that all inhabitants of this earth are children of god? What kind of "parent" would let so many of their children suffer in as many ways as many do on this earth? If the bible is actually the word of god, then god must be a sadist to allow this to happen.

Religion is not logical to me. In no shape, form or fashion.

Try explaining religion out loud without using words like god/heaven/devil/hell. It sounds crazy af. Say it out loud and really listen to yourself.

E.g. there's this spirit in the sky who's watching us from a magical place. When you die, your soul either goes to the magical place OR to the scary, fiery place ruled by an evil spirit. In the magical place, you're reunited with everyone who's ever died and wasn't sent to the fiery place. In the magical place, souls have wings. You can't see souls when you're on earth, but when you die, they become visible and hang out in groups.

It's pure lunacy. A fable complete with a fairy godfather and a troll/ogre who lives under the bridge.

I understand that people tend to believe what they're taught, but I don't understand WHY. You don't have to accept everything that you're taught.

My parents, teachers and pastor taught me all kinds of crap, but I filtered out the impractical things. Like calculus and holding a finger over my mouth while standing in the lunch line.

Look, the only proof of suffering that's possible in our observable universe comes from life itself. Therefore the closest thing to hell is being alive.

No, anything religious is just a fictional concept to me. This world that we exist in is the true hellish nightmare, I believe that when we die we just simply cease to exist and that is it for us, we are gone. Life only exists as a consequence of evolution anyway, there is no deeper meaning to any of this, there is no purpose to any of this, life only exists for the sake of it. There is no point to worrying about the possibility of this, there is no evidence to prove that it's true, the whole concept of suicide being sinful is just a way for people to try and scare others from suicide, it's complete nonsense to me. The only thing that I fear is the world that we already exist in with all of the unlimited amounts of torture that exists, the thought of being gone from this world is the only relief to me.

No, I don't believe in hell or any form of afterlife. When we are dead - we are gone. The only thing that will remain are memories people have of us.

For me there are good examples of both heaven and hell here on earth. Wonderful good things exist in this world, but so do appalling and horrendous things. I am an atheist, not that it matters. I just think there are plenty of examples of hell right here in our world. On any given day, beautiful things can occur as well as dreadful things. I would respect whatever you felt more comfortable with.

I feel the same way. It's gibberish to me. I can't believe I used to believe in that stuff, but when you're raised like that...
My whole thing is, if you're going to threaten me with eternal damnation if I don't worship you, I'm going to need concrete proof you exist. Hell (and other variations) was just created to deter people away from thinking critically about what they believe in.

I don't believe in hell.

I don't think it's existence is in anyway necessary or beneficial to influence human behavior. People don't need a reason (heaven) to do good, or a reason (hell) to avoid sin. Most people are naturally empathetic and want to reduce the collective suffering of others.

So if I was going to pick and choose from a "man-made" theory of existence, and there are many out there to choose from, the shallow concept of heaven and hell indoctrinated into most christian faiths is to me one of the least appealing.

If I am going to whole heartedly believe in a fantasy written by humans for humans, I would rather it be one that has metaphysical meaning, makes a solid attempt to explain the purpose of our existence and the universe, as well as provide some sort of explanation for human suffering.

To my understanding, hell wasn't considered a part of christian belief for the majority of the time it's existed - Buddhist practices has featured hells since very early on in associated literature, but hell emerges very late into christian belief. Most of the words that get translated into 'hell' in modern English bibles weren't referring to an afterlife of torture - if you want to get a better sense of where western ideas of hell came from, looking into the history each of those words in the bible that get translated as 'hell' is a great place to start.

I don't believe in hell, but American christian beliefs and worldviews are really deeply ingrained into how I think (as much as I wish they weren't). Looking into the history of these parts of the bible helped me see the 'hell' I grew up imagining as the medieval fabrication it likely is, and helped me distance it from the way I understand the world.

while I do call myself christian I have very little faith. though to answer your question no I don't. seeing stories of those who were clinically dead, survived death if you, solidified my assumption that there's nothing after death. If anything it made me even more welcome to it.

Don't believe in it, if I'm wrong and I'm sent there, I'll apply for a job. Hear me out. I have a pretty good imagination so maybe a torture demon and if I'm good at it, it won't seem like work. Plus, great job security, it's eternal. I mean, imagine being on the shift that tortures Hitler. Jokes aside, I really don't think you have to worry about it but plead to your god your case on why ctb is the right choice for you (if you decide it is), and try to forgive yourself. God is supposed to be forgiving right?

From what I have learned there is no hell like we are told. I'm not sure how God will deal with people who are not saved. The only ones who cannot ever be saved are people who make the concious decision to be born again of Satan's seed.

The Abrahamic gods (Christianity, Islam, & Judaism) are logically impossible as they are believed to be all knowing (AK), all powerful (AP) and all good (AG). However, an AKAPAG god would want to remove suffering by virtue of being AG, would be able to do so by being AP, and would know of our suffering by being AK. Because suffering exists, one of these 3 criteria cannot exist simultaneously.

Many will say "god works in mysterious ways" but this is just giving up our logic to blind faith; in which case god created us too stupid to reasonably believe in him, which is incompatible with the notion that we are created in god's image.

The philosophical problem of evil gives me confidence that I won't wake up in hell moments after ctb. By Abrahamic logics every person who ctb is going to hell for eternity. This includes both voluntary assisted dying (what we're discussing on this forum) and medical assistance in dying for chronic pain, terminal illness, etc.

It is absurd to think that the Abrahamic "hell" exists and I condemn whatever cruel god would allow this despite their knowledge of and ultimate power to change it.

It's a really terrifying hypothesis though and I believe it has been designed this way to serve a functional social utility, historically speaking; existential terror is a very motivating drive (perhaps the quintessential hedonic drive; - to seek pleasure and avoid pain), psychologically speaking.

True. I was listening to a philosopher. This is what he said .. think of the most pleasurable thing this world can offer..like the most pleasurable stuff. Now think of the most horrendous thing , the worst form of pain that can occur.

The pain outright outweighs the pleasure. Not to mention, the pleasures are short lived only for few seconds or minutes , the pain..not so much.

Yes. My take is purely mathematical. I shall pray , and try to do good things. If there truly is a God , it will pay off. If not , nobody is going to be harmed. But instead of ctb , I shall be praying for the law to change. For everyone to have the right to bodily autonomy. For everyone to be able to leave when the pain goes beyond threshold. When there is no more net positive experiences to be derived. When there is nothing holding one back to this earthly existence.

so there is a place worse than the worst prisons in the world? there is a worse place than being a slave in one's lifetime? there is a worse place than being in Nouth Korea slave camps? there is a worst place than being raped? (Don't a lot of religions believe that you go to hell if you commit suicide?)

... so there is a worse place after committing suicide and prior to that being raped while being a slave your whole life? There is a worse place than etc etc... No Way! Please show me this place? 🤦
