Has anyone tried to make their own SN before? Just found a "recipe" that looks doable, with the ingredients readily available…

Any chemists here who could tell me if it would actually work?

"Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) can be prepared by the reaction of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) with a reducing agent under acidic conditions. One common method involves the reduction of sodium nitrate with sulfamic acid…."

It'd be easier to just buy it only costs like $100 delivered and properly packaged so you can keep it for years if you're not ready to ctb.

It would work, but impurities are very common if not done stechiometrically and with a lot of precision. After all, its best to just get SN directly; and also, reducing from sodium nitrate isn't the most effective method. Imo, it would better to form the salt by neutralization or reactions with easier compounds…

Precise chemistry is both an art and a skill and isn't readily accessible to everyone. Can you technically make SN at home? Yes. Are the ingredients, tools, and skills required to do so readily accessible to the general public? No. It is very easy to screw up chemistry resulting in very low yields or a very impure product. Either buying online or choosing another method are way more accessible.

It's possible, but rather hard and expensive for somebody who doesn't have too much chemistry knowledge. You'd need nano3 (around 5 euro for 500g), a good apparatus (my father's apparatus cost around 800 euro, but you could probably get a cheaper one or something), some metallic agent that would have a reducing effect (Pb, Fe) and something to heat it up with (a Bunsen burner costs aorund 70 euros, and a cheap furnace costs around 800 euros).
The heating part is a hell and would be incredibly hard. Separating and purrifying will also be hard, or at least it would be for me.
I'd say it's easier to just find some good sources and order from them. Sn is really cheap and easy to find if you know how to look for it

Why not just buy pure SN? It's like £10 for a kg.

I would if I could but I'm in Aus & it's an S7 poison …can't buy it without a licence legally & don't know if it'd make it through customs if I bought it from o/s

I used to enjoy Chemistry…this isn't the flame of hell method …this is a gentle simmer of solutions then separate method.
I was planning to use my gas stove for heat source, was going to buy class beakers, stirrers, paper filters etc…

No idea where to start looking for SN in Aus

My opinion? If you don't know advanced chemistry don't try it. You can end up with a slightly different substance and suffer what is not written.
