i'm at the point where i'm done trying to find a method, just going to shoot myself and be done with it. i've heard shotguns are effective but that kind of freaks me out, i'd really prefer a handgun if possible. is there anything else that needs to be taken into account like ammunition? i've tried looking around at other threads but i haven't had much luck with the search function
and i guess a follow up question, would i even be able to buy one if i was in the psych ward (voluntarily) last year?

Why does a shotgun freak you out? If you shoot the right place its guaranteed to be instant.

With a pistol you can end up being alive for a while (even if you are unconscious for most of it) It's far more likely to fail with a pistol or to end up taking a bit of time to die with a pistol

Yeah, thats understandable.
But just be careful. Because i assume if you mean you want something for a funeral, you would shoot your temple with a pistol, which can often times fail, or end up with you being alive for a hour or two (probably unconscious).

Shotgun suicide looks scarier but its way more likely to be successful and instant for the one doing it.

To answer your question, and I'm not a lawyer nor legal expert, but I believe federally you should be able to pass the background check if your psych ward stay was "voluntary" rather than being involuntary (forced by court order or being taken there against your will).

I know you might go for a shotgun, but if going for a pistol, I would say 9mm caliber Hollow Point is the way to go because it spreads upon impact and doesn't overpenetrate (hollow point rounds are often made for stopping threats, aka self-defense round). For shotguns, 00 buckshot would be more reliable and while birdshot could work, buckshot is much more reliable.
