Chat vs conversation

Sorry this has already been asked I couldn't find a answer that made total sense to me. What's the difference between start chat or start conversation?

I sent you a message using both ways. The chat is sending messages using SaSu's chat feature. And the conversation is to talk with other users in a more formal style that resembles threads, but private.

Start conversation is better because the chat has an error and does not send notification of new messages.
