Planning on using my SN soon. I want my organs to be donated when I pass so that someone can make use of them. Can my organs be donated if I'm using SN?

No, you can't. Not bc of SN but bc they would have to catch you exactly in that moment before you're "brain dead". At this stage, machines would keep your body and organs "alive". The chances are likely very high that they would start resuscitating you. Too risky for a serious suicide attempt. You can't donate organs when you're actually dead.

additionally, the methemoglobemia could damage the organ before it can be transplanted, even if a transplant could be arranged as soon as one is unconscious... maybe in that case the damage is mild... but they'll need to administer methelyne blue to whoever receives the organ.

you don't have to donate organs to be a donor. you can donate skin tissue, tendons (especially the Achilles tendon), femur bones and pericardium (protective sac around the heart). I used to be a medical graft technician, processed dozens of all of the above. the resulting tissue is donated to hospitals nationwide and serves mostly cancer patients, victims of car accidents, injured athletes, etc.. I would do some research into exactly what you can opt into in your local area, be informed of the conditions they accept, and make the choice you feel is right.

Thank you for the information

Yes I vaguely recall reading somewhere that organs cannot be donated due to SN. Thanks for your reply

Can tissue be donated after death? I am willing to donate whatever can be used.

over here in the US, each state has a registry where you can register to become an organ, eye & tissue donor. some places here let you do it completely online and then send you a card of some kind that indicates you are a donor, so the coroner knows where to deliver you first.

I am not familiar with Australia but it seems very similar, you can just register online here. it will ask for your medicare info. I know it says "organ" specifically, but according to health.gov.au this covers all forms of donation, including tissue.

I would say just register regardless and get your donor card. in the event of your death they will look, decide what what they can or can't salvage, and then proceed from there. the worst thing that can happen is nothing, but that's not a failure on your part.

Thanks so much for your detailed response and for also doing the research for my location! I had a look and have now registered.
