I have attempted a few times and i've been wondering just how much damage have i done to myself? What would it compromise to my normal life?

The only way to know is to go to a neurologist, unfortunately.

ehh i dunno i feel okay lmao
i was afraid of the same thing (health ocd) after many, maany partial runs as 'practices' including some close calls + head trauma

i got lots of tests and scans for my head, neck, organs and vessels around there. nothing was wrong. you're probably alright too

if not from asphyxiation/oxygen deprivation, lots of people get permanently brain damaged from sports and concussions, early drug and alcohol abuse, accidents, etc. anyway without realizing. a good chunk of the population's probably a little slower neurologically but the body's resilient.

It still risky, but ig if you pass out for less than 5 mins or just stop when your vision darkens, it's fine? Not sure though.

Firefighter here (we have some basic EMT training), any kind of strangulation for even a brief length of time can and will most likely cause health issues that may present themselves years down the line. If blood supply to the brain is restricted brain damage (though likely not severe) can happen in seconds and it does not require significant pressure. It can also damage blood vessels in your neck, leading to blood clots - meaning later you may have a stroke. The type and amount of brain damage can't be seen without medical tests, and it may not have happened, but you may have some memory issues, for example, depending on how long you strangulated yourself and whether you passed out.

I practiced partial hanging a few times, but I never managed to pass out. However I noticed some issues with hearing and I was convinced I had damaged myself. I went to a neurologist and he did the routine neurological tests, and said I was fine.
He did ask if I had passed out. If you didn't pass out, you probably didn't block the carotid, and your brain oxygen supply never went down to alarming levels.
I did ask about the jugular veins blockage, because I had that exploding head feeling. He said something about the circle of willis, and how the brain regulates pressure, and said it would require a "long time" to actually cause damage.
I'll edit this post and add links to old threads discussing this.
Maybe the neurologist lied to me though.
I am not saying practicing partial is risk free. You CAN get brain damaged. But I would bet you're fine. If you are still OCD about It, you can go to a neurologist and say that you attempted in the past but are not currently looking to CTB anymore. He can order a MRI and give you some peace of mind

Thank you 😭 I was getting anxious from all the people saying "you're probably fine."

As someone with minor brain damage, it depends on the person. There is no "if you only pass out for (this many) minutes you're fine!" rule of thumb, unfortunately.

you're probably alright too
Please don't say this to someone who is genuinely worried about brain damage. If they have it, you may be encouraging them to put off treatment.

You were fine, yes, but you don't know this person's body or brain. Maybe they have a higher resting oxygen rate, so damage was caused faster.

Brain damage is seriously not fun to live with (source: me) so I encourage anyone wondering if the have it to get checked out.

As I said on another thread, claiming that it was during (auto-)erotic asphyxiation is best to get the neurologist to:

1. Take you seriously/know what to look out for regarding causes and types of damage

2. Not assume suicidal ideation

If you're sex repulsed, you can claim that you got into a fight with someone and they choked you a while ago (just say you're figuring out how to press charges and leave it at that) or something.

Solid suggestion, there is no safe way to choke someone so such cases are not rare at all. What I said above would apply to any kind of erotic strangulation as well.

I read this thread a little and it's scared shit out of me actually.

Before I made any suicide attempts, I was playing around with oxygen deprivation as form of self-harm. I hadn't pass out, but reached a state where my vision darkened.

Then I tried PH several times and my vision was also getting dark, but I still didn't lose consciousness.

I feel fine though. But now I can't be 100% sure.
