  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

I'm not religious by any means, and you don't have to be religious to wish people peace. I don't see what's the issue with others having a different style / method when it comes to bidding someone farewell. Some goodbyes are straightforward, and others have more to say. You can be sentimental and loving without religion in the equation... So many people here in SS are hurting and suffering on a daily basis that when we do see a goodbye thread we want to provide that member with as much love and comfort as they ctb. That's just how I see it, honestly.

If it makes you feel any better, I agree with you, OP. Afterlife will feel the same as pre-birth: literal nothingness.
How do you know? Do you remember anything?

That would kind of be the point....there was nothing before, so therefor there would be nothing after.

But how come there is something between the 2 nothings, could it repeat itself?
nothing -- something -- nothing -- something ......

That's for everyone to decide for themselves, really. Not for any of us to tell a person, since it'll always be biased by our personal experiences.

Or it could be that you simply don't remember what came before.

( re-posting a statement I've made a few times before )

My opinion :
After death, you'll go to "heaven" (there is no hell), but it's not necessarily a 100% free ride.
You'll have a "life review", where you evaluate the life you just lived, to try to extract the lessons learned.
But for the most part it will be a good experience, and support will be given where needed from guides, etc.
Your new life in heaven may last quite a while, but if your soul hasn't reached it's full potential of enlightenment yet, then it's possible that you may eventually re-incarnate, but not until you've had a damned good rest, and are ready to "go at it" again....
But I wouldn't worry too much about the re-incarnation bit, for now you just can just think of it as you're going to heaven for a pretty long time....

It really makes me feel ashamed--and rather inadequate--to say that when I die I'm merely going to be dead. Like a cow, like a dog, like a worm, like a fly, like a protozoa. All chemical and electrical processes ended, just a 175-pound sack of meat. Gosh, just saying it sounds so depressing, so final.

Totally get that. Plus as a 100% non-believer myself and thus convinced of nothingness hereafter I wouldn't be able to handle goodbye post replies referring to God or afterlife in my last moments as that would all feel like a huge lie. It's a bit comparable with my long-standing fear of then having some mother theresa hanging above me trying to reassure me with the words "jesus is waiting for you...ow yeah" while wtf..

Why would anyone ban you for speaking your mind?

It's not a crime to speak positively about religion. Not yet anyway :heh:

Like you I don't believe in an afterlife. When you die, it's like turning the light off. So being dead isn't the problem for me. Dying is.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't have liked to have an afterlife though. Provided it was some kind of higher existence, or maybe waking up from the simulation, if that's what this life is.

You cannot possibly know this and I find the "end of story", "period", "full stop" sort of things after an opinion to be as arrogant and annoying as I do peple who preach Jesus saves etc. Nobody knows what is after if anything. Not one of us. We will simply find out or we won't. The only reasonable answer is "I don't know" when asked this question. I apologize if I misread your intent...but it seems its always militant, smug atheists declaring their "truth" or religious zealots doing the same. I see very little reasonable response to this issue in life.

This, this, and more this.

I'm very open-minded and think anything is possible, because it is. This universe and consciousness and existence itself and everything is all so bizarre that literally anything could be the case. Maybe it is all just random chaos, or maybe there's a God, or a creator that doesn't necessarily have control over all this, or multiple leaders, or maybe it's just some bizarre chain the universe itself created and you go through different realms and shit. Who knows?

I can understand strong belief in something. Whether it's through personal experiences or research. There are people who are convinced that near death or spiritual experiences were 100% real...who am I to say they weren't? Just like who am I to say people who have died for a little while and said there was nothing were wrong? I'm not going to say that the scientific knowledge we've gathered is wrong, but I definitely think it's possible that we simply don't have all the facts and may not be able to comprehend what this all could be.

But I agree here, there's a certain smugness that some people have when they say they "know". Again, I totally get if someone's had an experience that may well have been real, so they feel like they do. But in the end...whatever the truth might be no matter what somebody believes in...science has not been fully able to explain consciousness and religion has not been able to explain why if there is a God that the world is so unjust or inexplicably cruel to some.

My personal opinion is that we really don't know anything about anything. The question is if it will be explained one day or if it's just all randomness that can never truly be explained to anyone.

Amazing that you feel so fucking smug about your own death (71! WOO HOO, I MADE IT LMAO no fear of death, LOL), yet begrudge others who want to end it sooner than you.

Sounds to me like you have a severe fear of death and are projecting this onto others.

Take your advice and shove it up you old ass.

I find it hard to turn from my training. Still, I find no comfort in the thought of an afterlife. If there is a life after this, then I fully expect to find the same cruelty and torture in it that I have found in this life. Others might have heaven, but I expect that I would find hell. One life was enough trouble. Why would I want another? Still, I hope the gentle souls would find rest in an afterlife.

I find the idea of nothingness to be ideal. It would be better to have nothing than to be living with suffering. I'm not aiming at gaining anything by dying. I'm simply turning away from pain. It would be better that I had never been born. I was not before my birth and I should expect to return to the same.
