I've been around for about 10 or so years, back when discords for this were first thriving, back when 8ch was around etc. I had some SN ready in case then, but I thought I was recovering. I wasn't. I think it's time to go, but now SN is hard to obtain. Any advice would be appreciated.

I see. Thank you that's helpful. I actually thought I had thrown away my SN but I found it. Unfortunately, the bottle does not appear to be airtight (It's the loudwolf brand back when you could get 100g or so on amazon, I had opened the airtight seal to put some in a smaller container) i do not trust it ,and it would be responsible to start fresh. If anyone has advice however and knows if my bottle is likely still fine I'd appreciate that too. I purchased it 5 years ago (also when it was opened once, then capped, but again i squeeze the bottle and i see air can pass ). I looked up ways of testing but they seem complicated, and one site had test strips that wouldnt tell me purity and would only turn blue if SN present.( also they were like 70 bucks, blech)

Personally, I think SN degradation is largely overstated here, depending on how it is stored. Since it is hygroscopic it can absorb moisture from its environment and can oxidize to nitrate, so keeping it in a closed and dry place should be optimal.

Another thing people bring up quite a bit is that it will start degrading once exposed to air with a half-life of 80 or so days (meaning half of it will degrade in that time) mostly disregarding that it's a photochemical reaction and it needs light for it to happen. So again keep it in a closed space (away from direct light) and it should be fine.

However since it has been 5 years since you purchased it and there is no way for me to tell at what conditions it was stored during that time - I'd recommend to test it with some aquarium test strips, it might be even helpful info for others that intend to keep their SN stored for a long time just as a peace of mind. It could stand as actual proof that SN can be stored for many years and still be fine or maybe disprove it (depending on how you store it ofc). Even if you decide to get new SN from a different source, it is still recommended to test it with aquarium nitrite testing strips and is fairly simple to do (and relatively cheap, the strips cost me less than $20 converted with shipping).

Here is a great guide on how to test it: Here is a guide on SN itself, with pictures on how to test it:
