Beachy Head Chaplains

Ok so Beachy head is one of my methods of choice, in the next year or so. But I want to just go there a few times to get the feel of the place so I’m ready for even the time is right. One such occasion was about 2 weeks ago. I arrived in one of the car parks about 4ish so twilight. I walked to the cliff edge near the old lighthouse.. i was near the edge a long while looking over and thinking.. yes I could have done it but for certain reasons it wasn’t quite my time. People walked by and I KNOW I probably looked dodgy. But there were no chaplains around and it would have been very very easy. When I passed the Beachy Head pub (closed due to lockdown) I saw the chaplain vehicles parked in there.. none roaming about.
SO what I’m basically saying is if Beachy Head is your choice, it’s pretty easy, I was worried before about the guys trying to stop you but there’s no need to worry at all.

It’s a beautiful place to die. I went and my SI kicked in and I couldn’t jump, I was just mesmerised by what I was looking at. I’m sad it was a no go for me because it really is a peaceful place to end your journey but I see why so many people are drawn there. This was my spot. I wish you well with your journey

I totally feel you. It’s perfect. I think I know when the time is right I’ll do it. I’ll probably need to have a bottle of Jack Daniels first and the right music on my headphones but that’s the place I know it.

Yeah nothing like a bit of Dutch courage to settle the SI. I definitely advocate having the right song blast through your headphones. I remember standing near the edge with my chosen song repeating itself over and over in my headphones. When I listen to it I am transported back to that sweet sweet spot

I would never have the guts. It's beautiful but a long drop to the ground and a hard landing. Then someone has to go get the corpse. What if death is not instant?

Beachy Head is high enough that death would be instant thankfully. I guess I do sometimes worry a little about brain activity the moments after death though.

It is beautiful. I remember on the news once a girl was taking a selfie and fell by accident. Got too close to the edge.

I live in a place with 500ft basalt cliffs nearby, even within walking distance. There was an accidental fall from one and a dog fell from another. Both deaths. I hike along them sometimes and feel the call of the void. Would 500ft be enough of a drop?

There's also a rather large bridge and someone jumped off that. I guess I'd be spoilt for choice if this was my chosen method.

You can also desensitise yourself to something like this by engaging in coasteering - jumping off sea cliffs in a wetsuit. I can so easily launch myself into the water, but I think landing on solid ground would be a much harder endeavour.

I had an encounter with them Thursday but only after about an hour and a half on the top. They just ask if you are ok, they have no power and actually are decent enough. Just don't go in the building past the shop on the right as they will call police, but if you do have a convincing story, they may even make you a cup of tea

I went a few years ago. I sat at the edge sobbing for hours. Noone came to talk to me.

I know they don't come out a lot in the winter months so is a lot easier to be alone up there. Just watch out for cars passing on the road as sometimes they slow down to see why people are up there and go to the hut where Chaplin's are

It's to the right of the shop and pub, although the pub makes an excellent coffee

Thank you for the heads up as BH is on my list of possibles and knowing it’s accessible without having someone trying to remind me what I’ve got to live for which will just make things worse. Lucky for me too as it’s local to me so hence why on my top 3 list

I found exactly the same. Have been few time now and also been to the lighthouse at the bottom as you can see better from there where the cliff is steepest with no overhangs. They only come looking for you if you leave the car in one of the parking bays after dark.

If one jumps from beachy head, what do you hit when you fall water or slanted edge rock or whatever ?

Depends on tide but from correct spot you will hit the stones on beach so solid ground basically or bits of rock fall. You have to look out for any ledges. Google base jumpers on BH and you will see what you land on. The correct spot is about 450ft you can go to spot that is just over 500ft but the fall is not vertical to many ledges and you could end up surviving which would be bad. You can even chat to the cattle grazing before you jump, or is that just me

Walk down the road from the pub you will go up on the hill and see the red and white light house down below. If that is in front of you there is a bit of cliff that sticks out a little on your right that is vertical and you will see the cattle fenced off or go back to your right a little and you will see vertical drops there. The grass is worn away at the right places. You will easily see the spots but look for the red and white light house and anywhere in front or to the left (if looking out to sea) Is perfect spot but I didn't tell you that

Where I was standing is lighthouse don't go to the point on left not good spot just find lighthouse on beach and you are good to go. If you go between lighthouses is vertical but only 300ft. Basically lighthouse you will see cattle fenced off and ground is worn away a bit (no grass and you are in best spot)


Don't go to far left as you can see the cliff is not vertical. Enjoy trip there

Truth be told the Chaplains are nothing like as pro active as they claim to be. I lived in that area for a year in 2012/2013 (I moved there from Yorkshire for the precise reason of having BH nearby) I often used to walk from Eastbourne to Seaford in the evening and I think I saw their red jeep drive pass me ONCE (they took a brief look and carried on)

I've been told that when they do intercept a potential suicide, they offer hot chocolate, biscuits and various religious platitudes (I think the later would hasten my leap) but they are not permitted to physically restrain.

They only patrol as far as Birling Gap so if you wish to avoid them choose a spot beyond that, the cliffs heading towards Seaford are not as high (but still high enough) and they are a sheer vertical drop, the cliffs near the lighthouse are inclined meaning a jumper gets cuts the bits on the way down before hitting the bottom.

The chaplains approached me when I was hovering exactly in the place @justanotherstar photographed. We talked for a while and I eventually agreed to step back. They didn’t say anything religious... they were very kind and I was grateful to them. Not for ‘saving’ me (I couldn’t jump - my SI was too high when faced with the reality of the drop and the rocks at the bottom) but for comforting me when I was at my lowest and so cold I could barely move. They also defended me when a passer-by decided to watch and shout abuse.
Also, they told me that they knew which car was mine. I had parked in a lay-by quite a way from the pub so they must have had their eye on me for some time. I read an interview with them once and I remember them saying something about how they don’t try to stop people exactly - just give them comfort, whatever they decide.

I've been surveying the area for a little while now, no one has approached me but to be honest I think I would just tell them to f**k off and mind there own business, I have felt a rising feeling to have a go at anyone who might approach me and explain it's my own choice, totally pointless I know but perhaps a brief bit of entertainment.

I felt a great feeling when I was last there, I walked right to the edge and if I'm honest I felt dizzy, I don't like the parking really there's no privacy and one of the car parks is national trust or something and there sometimes a bit fussy about who parks.
